NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
February 8, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM (written on February 7th)
In today's Upper Room Daily Devotion we are reminded of the importance of, and difficulty of, forgiving ourselves.
Our sister church sign reads, "Forgiveness is not automatic", which, to me, means that it must be applied for, and reminds me that the application has some specific pieces to it.
As we approach another Lenten season this sort of topic seems appropriate and perhaps will get some of our attention during those six weeks. Let us, for now, be willing to think about "self-forgiveness", and be preparing to make our appeals in the tradition of David, whose journey we have recorded in Psalm 51, the core of which says, "have mercy on me, O Lord, according to your unfailing love and great compassion". This verse should help us understand anew that the basis for our forgiveness is founded in God's love and mercy, not our merit. Hence self-forgiveness can come out of self-love and mercy, can we begin to love ourselves and be merciful with ourselves in this powerful way. It affects how we are able to share God's love and be in effective service to the Christ and his church and the degree to which we can extend our forgiveness and love to others. Let's be thinking about it, and be prepared to have a Lenten conversation about, and celebration of "self-forgiveness"!
See ya' Sunday!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim
