NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
April 7,2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
The Easter Cantata,"Forsaken" made me feel, in the words of our Children's Corner leader last Sunday, Bev Perrachione, "happy-sad"! The quality and quantity of the voices and the music made me happy, but the nature of the events the lyrics called to my mind, save for the final pieces, made me sad.
To be "forsaken" is to be "abandoned", "deserted", "given up on" —none of which feels good, all of which our Lord felt during this Holy Week, and some of which, all of us feel, occasionally.
Ironically, God's work and love and life in Christ intends to do just the opposite, but for those "dark" hours that we are remembering and rehearsing this week, it was different, as captured by the Cantata author and presenters.
Those horrible hours gave way to the news of victory and the promise of the opposite of "forsaken" for the future, thanks be to God. So the Cantata, the initial Holy Week, and this Holy Week, take us to a good place over a bumpy road.
See ya' Sunday to celebrate the victory!
See ya' Sunday!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim

Thanking God . . . For Your Servant Heart!
First UMC loves its church family!
We are looking at expanding how you can serve at First UMC. More people could be involved on Sunday mornings. There are several different ways to serve God in worship. In scripture it says, “Doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men.” Hebrews 6:6b-7
This Sunday morning commitment is only once every 2 months. We are collecting names. If you have already received a schedule from your coordinator, please follow that.
