NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
September 6, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
I hope that your Labor Day holiday was pleasant and provided the necessary final summer breath to give energy for the busy Fall; we look forward to all that means for First UMC beginning with Rally Day, continuing with the all church Committees/Council meeting on Monday at which we have a church conversation as to "How's it going?" and "How will it go over the next 15 months?" Your voice is needed, welcome, and appreciated to help us discern God's will and way forward!
This "discernment" piece is an idea that leads me back to Jeremiah's concern that we were discussing Sunday, "Where is the Lord?" Let us continue to think that thought and ask that question as God through Jeremiah invites us.
Where is the Lord in our daily lives? Our personal and professional plans? Our spiritual and church life? Are we trying it on our own, "digging our own leaky cisterns"?
Having given those questions some thought and reflection will help prepare us for Monday night's work questions. "Where is the Lord at First UMC?", "Where would the Lord have First UMC be in the coming months and years?" How will your committee help us get there?"
Se ya' Sunday for Rally time and Monday for Work time,
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim

The kits need to be at church by Sunday October 7 because the committee will be boxing them on Tuesday October 9. They will be sent to the Mini-Festival at Macon on October 14.
The Missions Committee is recommending that the Festival of Sharing offering be given to the Heifer International Festival of Sharing project which is described below.
The "Farmers Feed the Children Project" is one that helps not only the participating farmers but also orphaned, ill and disabled children in the country of Romania. Farmers in need are given bred dairy heifers. When the heifers calve, the cows are milked, greatly improving the nutrition for the project families. The farmers also share the milk with children in eleven orphanages, five hospitals and two schools for physically and mentally challenged children. Farmers "pass on the gift" by giving offspring from their cows to these institutions. The farmers have already banded together to build a plant for processing and pasteurizing the milk.
The Festival of Sharing is an inter-faith, state-wide, ingathering event which is held on the third Saturday in October at the State Fair grounds in Sedalia, MO. his year it will be on Saturday, October 20th. You are very welcome to attend this event--it is an amazing day of missions. If you want more information about the many dimensions of the Festival, contact Keith Harrison or any member of the Missions Committee.
"Helping Hands" will be a non-profit community service facility located at 111 E. Harrison Street. They will open on September 10th and are operating on prayers, faith, and donations. They will have used clothing, furniture, general household items and within the next few months will have home cooked food available.
If you would like to donate items or money, contact 665-2380 or 665-8878. They will pick up all yard-sale leftovers
