DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM

This week I would like to share with you a tribute to our flag that was shared with us by Donna Bailey during the Children's Message at the 8:15 service last Sunday.

I am the Flag of the United States of America

I am the flag of the United States of America
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand wa\tch in American's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth, and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident. I am arrogant. I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher, my colors a little truer.
I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped. I am saluted.
I am loved. I am revered
I am respected. I am feared.

I have fought in every battle of war for more than 200 years.
I was flown over Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Appomattox.
I was there at San Juan Hill, the trenches of France,
in the Argonne forest, Anzio, Rome and the beaches of Normandy.
Guam, Okinawa, Korea, KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam, Bosnia all know me.
I'm presently in the mountains of Afghanistan
and the hot and dusty deserts of Iraq.
Wherever freedom is needed, I lead my troops.

I have been dirty, battleworn, and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me and I was proud.
I have been burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries I have helped find freedom.
I have been soiled upon, burned, torn and trampled in the streets of my own country.
And when it's done by those whom I've served in battle, it hurts.
However, I shall overcome for I am strong.
I am invincible.

I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stood watch over the uncharted frontier of space from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness to all of American's finest hours.
But my finest hours are when I am torn into strips and used as bandages for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
when I am flown at half-mast to honor one of my soldiers,
or when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving parent or spouse
at the grave of their fallen son, daughter, or spouse,

I am proud.
Please love and respect me that I may continue to fly proudly
over the land of the free and the home of the brave.

See ya' Sunday!

Love in Christ,

Rev. Jim

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO REV. JIM!

June 29th was Rev. Jim's birthday. To say thank you to him we are taking a special offering the month of June and extended to July 15th. Our church is one of many across the nation that supports Strength for Service, a devotional book written for those in the service of others. More than 250,000 copies of this life-changing book have already been distributed overseas, but hundreds of thousands more are need for those currently serving stateside or abroad. Your donations will make a difference in the lives of our military men and women, our American heroes.

Since Annual Conference, there is another project which Rev. Jim would like us to support. This is "Nothing But Nets." The United Methodist Church is partnering with the NBA, Sports Illustrated, and the Gates Foundation to sponsor this program which is seeking to eradicate the problem of malaria by providing mosquito nets to people who cannot possibly afford them and who live in places where malaria takes the lives of many people, largely children every day. TEN DOLLARS to purchase a net will save a life for another person. Please indicate on your check which project you want to support or whether you want your donation divided evenly. There is a wooden house in the Narthex where you can put your donations or you may mail it to the church. We would like to have these collected by Sunday, July 15th.

TOTALS SO FAR: Books - $ 472.00
Nets $1,104.00
TOTAL $ 1,576.00
