NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
July 31, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
More about Oscar! So it turns out that Oscar is, indeed, a cat (too bad for Oscar)—but good news for the First Service folks who thought that was the case. I feel sort of like the Presidential candidates when they are debating. They are asked a question to which they give some lip service and then say, "but the real question is....." and go on to say what they wanted to say in the first place.
So the real questions are: "Isn't it amazing that Oscar has that special sense of the dying residents at his nursing home?", and "How does he know?", and "What are the implications for us?"
The answers are, respectively: "Yes", and "No one seems to know for sure", and "let's think about that".
Could there not be a parallel with each of us, in that God has given us a gift to develop and share in the context of our lives with the people nearby, dying or living? We might be challenged and invited to check the lists in the New Testament given in Romans 12, Ephesians 4, and I Corinthians 12. Our lives could be as meaningful as Oscar's when such gifts (or others that are not on the lists) are discerned and expressed, we, also, would create conversation while giving compassion. And it wouldn't have to be so mysterious, we could clearly state our service is given in the name of Christ in service to the Christ, for the glory of Christ (Col. 3:17).
See ya' Sunday!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim
FOOD 4 KIDS
This program has doubled in size from last year. We are truly making a difference for children in Kirksville. Children are learning prayers, having their stomach's filled, and are experiencing smiles, kindness, and conversation from caring Christian adults. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers that are helping to make this program work.
On Monday we received 3000 pounds of food for this program. This didn't include the milk and fresh produce that was to arrive on Wednesday. This program is growing so much we are running out of storage room for all the food. however, I must say it is quickly used up. The first week (only 4 days because of the 4th of July) we served 495 lunches. The second week we served 891 and last week 889 lunches were served. Last year year our biggest week we served 589 lunches.
I would like to thank John O'Brien and his crew of scouts and the Harrison girls for helping unload all that food on Monday. The work went very quickly with such good help. THANK YOU!
We are almost half-way through this program for this summer. This program would not be the success it is without Beverly Kitts and Anne Barlow. Beverly has worked endless hours getting volunteers to fill over 400 positions. Anne has been in the kitchen every day making sure everything runs smoothly and the coolers and supplies are ready to go to the parks when the volunteers arrive. I can't begin to thank these ladies enough. If you see them, give them a hug and tell them how much you appreciate them.
If you feel like this is a good program I would love to hear from you. If you feel that changes in this program need to be made I would love to hear about that too. When this program was started we were told that it would not cost anything. That is not quite true. We have needed to make purchases. Mostly these purchases have consisted of lunch sacks and sandwich bags. However, these do not come cheap, especially when you need to purchase several thousand at a time. If you are not able to volunteer for this program and you feel it is a worthwhile program, please consider a small donation.
Thank You
Denise Comstock
Thanks to everyone who is helping with this program. Last week we served 1,131 lunches to those in need. We couldn't do it without you. There is still time to volunteer in case another person has to be absent on their scheduled day. Please talk to Bev Kitts, Volunteer Coordinator, about this. If you can help with the unloading of food, let me know and I will give you the dates and times.
Last week they served 1,131 lunches. Monday, July 30th, they served 198 and on Tuesday they served 209.
Denise Comstock, Director

The total amount will be divided by $32.04 (the cost of mission work at home and abroad per minute) to determine how long the candle will burn. The money received will go for missions.
You may make your contribution by placing your check and name(s) of those being remembered or recognized on the sheet on Page 14. This may be put in the church offering plate or left in the church office. Please make checks payable to UMW and indicate it is for candle burning. It needs to be received by Wednesday, August 22nd.

BACK TO SCHOOL
BACK TO SCHOOL
The 17th annual Back to School project will take place August 1, 2007 at the Kirksville Primary School. The hours will be 11 AM to 2 PM. This project helps to ease the financial burden of getting students ready to go back to school. The only requirement for receiving the school supplies is to be a resident of Adair county and in need.
The Back to School committee is in need of the following:
1. monetary donations
2. volunteers to assemble school kits on July 31st at 5:30 PM at the church.
All are welcome for this work night, please just show up.
3. Strong volunteers to help carry kits into the Primary School at 9:30 AM on Aug.1st. Bring a moving cart if you have one.
4. Women to work at the event from 10:30 to 2:00 (part or all of the time)
5. Prayers for the continued success of this event. Please pray that through this project families in need are helped and their children can begin school with the learning tools they need for success.
