NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
August 30, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
The following is an interesting story about a
New Bar in Town!
In a small mid western conservative town, a new bar/tavern started a building to open up their business. The local church started a campaign to block the bar from opening with petitions and prayers. Work progressed, however right up till the week before opening, when a lightning strike hit the bar and it burned to the ground.
The church folks were rather smug in their outlook after that, till the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, either through direct or indirect actions or means.
The church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to the buildings demise in its reply to the court.
As the case made it's way into court, the judge looked over the paperwork at the hearing and commented, "I don't know how I'm going to decide this, but as it appears from the paperwork, we have a bar owner that believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that doesn't!"
Do we believe our prayers have power? Can we acknowledge it when they do? Hope you have some great final Summer 07 days—I look forward to a wonderful church year with you!
God bless!
See ya' Sunday,
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim

Please include $2 for shipping.
The kits need to be at church by Sunday October 7 because the committee will be boxing them on Tuesday October 9. They will be sent to the Mini-Festival at Macon on October 14.
The Missions Committee is recommending that the Festival of Sharing offering be given to the Heifer International Festival of Sharing project which is described below.
The "Farmers Feed the Children Project" is one that helps not only the participating farmers but also orphane, ill and disabled children in the country of Romania. Farmers in need are given bred dairy heifers. When the heifers calve, the cows are milked, greatly improving the nutrition for the project families. The farmers also share the milk with children in eleven orphanages, five hospitals and two schools for physically and mentally challenged children. Farmers "pass on the gift" by giving offspring from their cows to these institutions. The farmers have already banded together to build a plant for processing and pasteurizing the milk.
The Festival of Sharing is an inter-faith, state-wide, ingathering event which is held on the third Saturday in October at the State Fair grounds in Sedalia, MO. his year it will be on Saturday, October 20th. You are very welcome to attend this event--it is an amazing day of missions. If you want more information about the many dimensions of the Festival, contact Keith Harrison or any member of the Missions Committee.
REMEMBER that this week's Summer Concert on Friday, August 31st, at 7:00 p.m. will be held at the Courthouse. The group is "Horizon". Country and 50's and 60's music will be played.
"Helping Hands" will be a non-profit community service facility located at 111 E. Harrison Street. They will open on September 10th and are operating on prayers, faith, and donations. They will have used clothing, furniture, general household items and within the next few months will have home cooked food available.
If you would like to donate items or money, contact 665-2380 or 665-8878. They will pick up all yard-sale leftovers.
