NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
March 24, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
Today's reading in the Sanctuary for Lent devotional booklet reminds us of the response that some of Jesus' disciples made upon receiving his invitation to be "fishers of men"! They left their nets (boat, father) and immediately followed him" (Matt. 4: 18-22).
I am impressed with "immediately", didn't they have affairs to order first, relatives and friends to notify, schedules to rearrange, etc. Certainly most of us are not able to do "immediately" for these and/or other reasons, but the question is have we responded "slowly" "gradually" in our own time and on our own schedule, perhaps Jesus could be pleased with that as well.
And what sort of "nets" or "boats" do we have to say good-bye to in order to begin and continue this new calling? Are we able to do that? To find proper priority? To sense the urgency and the importance?
And can we leave "father", and/or whomever that would be for any of us? Other relationships, commitments? Desires? Preferences? Obviously we are learning that following the Christ involves making some choices, how are we doing? Might we use some of our Lenten time to review and rearrange as needed, with God's help? Could the church be helpful? Could we help one another?
See ya' Sunday!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim

Thanking God . . . For Your Servant Heart!
First UMC loves its church family!
We are looking at expanding how you can serve at First UMC. More people could be involved on Sunday mornings. There are several different ways to serve God in worship. In scripture it says, “Doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men.” Hebrews 6:6b-7
This Sunday morning commitment is only once every 2 months. We are collecting names. If you have already received a schedule from your coordinator, please follow that.
