DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM

Often we use the word "connectional" for the United Methodist Church, not always knowing what that means or what that looks like.  Well, I have witnessed the "connection" in the Shelbina Revival  this week in several ways.  The obvious "connection" is that I am a UM pastor being used as a resource to lead a revival in another UMC˜the UMC facilitates many such "connections" and sharing of resources˜so that, collectively, we have strengths and possibilities that we would not have individually.

Secondly, I saw the "connection" between our congregations.  At Shelbina, I met Charles Morses' brother-in-law, and a friend of Melba Bowen, and a college roommate of Phyllis Brummit, as well as a person who works in Kirksville, several people who remembered Supt. Jim Nevins, and some people who went to school at Truman State University or Northeast Mo. State University.  These were all nice connections and pleasant conversations.

Thirdly, some of the former Shelbina pastors were known to me, even instrumental in my life and ministry, the pastor who married Linda and me served the Shelbyville church and some people remembered him.

Fourthly, the Gospel story that I was preaching and inviting people to respond to is "connectional", in that, it is the same story in all places, for all people, and it is the story that connects people to God and God's people to each other˜hope you feel "connected"!

It was a good revival, I suggested that we continue to "connect" through prayer and that both of our churches would experience a "revival" commitment to our work and worship in this part of Christ's Kingdom!

See ya' Sunday for the Morley concert!

Love in Christ,

Rev. Jim

BOB MORLEY CONCERT

Return engagement - Singer, guitarist, story teller BOB MORLEY, will perform on Sunday, June 24th, at First United Methodist Church of Kirksville for both the 8:15 and the 10:45 services.

His performance last spring was an unqualified success, and we look forward to another enjoyable and inspiring performance.

A love offering will be taken for Rev. Morley and a portion of this will be given to our Nomad missionaries, Earl and Pat Ferguson.

                               HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO REV. JIM!

June 29th is Rev. Jim's birthday.  To say thank you to him we will be taking a special offering the month of June.  Our church is one of many across the nation that supports Strength for Service, a devotional book written for those in the service of others.  More than 250,000 copies of this life-changing book have already been distributed overseas, but hundreds of thousands more are need for those currently serving stateside or abroad.  Your donations will make a difference in the lives of our military men and women, our American heroes.

Since Annual Conference, there is another project which Rev. Jim would like us to support.   This is "Nothing But Nets."  The United Methodist Church is partnering  with other organizations to sponsor this program which is seeking to eradicate the problem of malaria by providing mosquito nets to people  who cannot possibly afford them and who live in places where malaria takes the lives of many people, largely children every day.  TEN DOLLARS to purchase a net will save a life for another person.  Please indicate on your check which project you want to support or whether you want your donation divided evenly.     There is a wooden house in the Narthex where you can put your donations.  We would like to have these collected by Sunday, June 24th.

                                                FOOD 4 KIDS

ONE WEEKEND LODGING NEEDED FOR TAIWAN STUDENTS ATTENDING TRUMAN STATE UNIVERSITY

My name is Brad Smith and my wife Rachel and I are in charge of this summer's Taiwan at Truman program.  Every summer a group of Taiwanese high school students comes to Truman to participate in our program.  The program is split into two parts: a girls' session and a boys', each lasting 5 weeks.  On weekdays the students take English classes from our very own Truman faculty.  On weekends, they go on trips around Missouri: this summer, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Columbia.
One weekend for each session is set aside for a local home stay in which we try to match our students up with local families for a complete immersion experience.  This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn more about American life and an equally wonderful opportunity for local families to get to know a student or two from another culture.
As it is, we are still looking for families to host for both the girls' and boys' sessions.
The girls' home stay weekend is June 22-24; the boys' is July 13-15.
Each family would be asked to take in two students for the weekend.  If a family would prefer only one, that could be arranged, but at this point we don't have enough families to accommodate that on a large scale.  The family would pick the students up on Friday night between 6-7 pm (after we have fed them dinner) and then drop them off Sunday between 4-5 pm (before we would feed them dinner).
Please contact me at smith.bradleyh@gmail.com if interested as soon as possible.  If you would prefer to speak on the phone, my cell # is 515-681-8938.
Thanks so much for your time; hopefully we will be seeing you soon.
Brad Smith
Program Director, Taiwan at Truman
