NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE

October 20, 2006

DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM

It was great fun and wonderful fellowship and a nice opportunity for spiritual growth at the Lowman Chapel Revival. That church was established in 1890 and much of the building is original and you can just feel the sacred history in that place, it is awesome.

The "Joyful Sound" added inspirational music and testimony; they are a duet that loves the Lord and enjoys singing the Gospel and do that very well (we need to have them here sometime, o.k.?)

Organized "Revivals" are a stranger to many of us, and a thing of the past for others, but I appreciate the concept and would encourage each of us to have a "revival" program, that challenges us with God's word, and invites a deeper and fresher walk with our Lord.

Each and every Sunday can be a time of "revival", I pray that happens from time to time—Consecration Sunday is a time to "revive" our sense of, and commitment to, the spiritual stewardship of all that God has entrusted to us—I invite us to be praying about that upcoming "consecration" time.

It was good to be away, but it is always good to be back with the good folk of First UMC!

See ya' Sunday!

Love in Christ,

Rev. Jim

Leaf Elimination Day!
Sign-up to have your leaves eliminated from your yard on October 28. Wesley House in conjunction with your youth group are volunteering to rake your yards and help you out. We are hoping to rake in two shifts, 9 AM-12 and 1-5 PM. As we expect there to much interest in this project, we have to make a few disclaimers. Not all yards will be able to be raked. This will be due in part to time and volunteers to rake. Also, we will consult with staff of First UMC to determine who has the greatest need, both physically and financially for our services. We would love to be able to rake everyone leaves, but we recognize that is not possible. If you need our services, please sign-up today! You will be contacted and informed if we will be able to rake your leaves or not.

"Trick or Trunk" -Fall Festival will be held on Sunday, October 29th, from 4-5 p.m. in the church parking lot. This is a brand new event to First UMC! We want the kids to come to church on Sunday evening dressed in their Halloween costumes and go trick—or trunking" in a safe and loving atmosphere. Members of the church will be decorating the trunk of their car in a Fall/Halloween theme (no scary items, please) and handing out candy in the parking lot. Yes, from the trunk of their car! We are expecting 75-100 children to participate. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE, PLEASE LET LYNAE KNOW BY THE MORNING OF OCTOBER 29TH. There will be hot dogs and drinks served.

Consecration Sunday will be October 29th. On that Sunday we will be invited to respond to the question “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” Having almost a month to consider our answers will ensure that our answers will be such that will be pleasing to God and very useful to the mission and ministry of God’s church in this part of God’s Kingdom!
Following each service there will be a brunch in Fellowship Hall.

SEEKING NAMES OF VETERANS

This year we are planning to have a special recognition of our veterans and spouses of veterans on Sunday, November 12th, which is also Choir Festival and Wesley House Turkey Dinner. Please return this information to the church office by Sunday, November 5th.
