NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE

July 9, 2008

A Note From Pastor Richard

My sermon on Sunday is entitled, “Planting Seeds & Waiting for Growth.” The sermon is based on the story of the farmer scattering seeds in Matthew 13. When I think of this story Jesus told, I am reminded of a song written by a mother for her daughter during the confirmation process in the first church I served. One of the verses of the song says, “You plant a seed. You hope it grows. What will come one never knows. And, you take the steps of faith in this soil you’ve been given. Then, you water it. Give it sunlight. Pull the weeds. And, you wait for the day.”
As I attended the Administrative Council meeting on Monday night, I heard reports from each of the committees about the many seeds being planted by a variety of ministries at First Church. The Vacation Bible School this week averaged about 120 kids a day. The Food 4 Kids program averaged more than 180 meals served in the first three days. These numbers represent a lot of seeds planted in this community. This is certainly good news.
Now, here is the hard part. Our efforts in life are not always measurable. Sometimes, we may not see the final product. We may not see the actual harvest. We can sow, but we cannot guarantee results. We can give it our best effort, but cannot completely control the outcome. Only God can do that. According to the Bible, God is convinced that in the end, when it comes to the harvest the results will be abundant. Therefore, we faithfully keep scattering seeds! See you on Sunday!!

"Coffee" with Pastor Richard

Staff Parish Relations Committee will be organizing a series of meetings between Pastor Richard and members of the church. The goal is to provide Pastor Richard informal opportunities to talk with people in small groups settings. Every church member will be invited to one such meeting over the course of the next few months. If you would be willing to host a meeting (of approximately 10-15 people) in your home, please contact the church office.

We welcome any information you want to share about accomplishments for yourself or your family. Please fill out the form below and return to us.
