A Note From Pastor Richard

One day a cowboy out in Arizona was riding down a trail. All of a sudden as he rounded a bend, he saw an Indian lying down in the middle of the trail. He had his ear pressed close to the ground. As he got closer the Indian began to speak. "Wagon," he said, "drawn by two horses. Horses both dapple gray. Passengers in wagon. Two passengers. One man, one woman. Man driving."
The cowboy was amazed. He just couldn't believe it. "That's incredible, I can't believe it! You can tell all of that just by listening with your ear to the ground?"
And the Indian replied, "No, they ran over me half an hour ago!"
Most of us get flattened out in life from time to time. Something comes along -- some disease, some circumstance, some broken relationship, some loss -- something comes along that knocks us off our feet and sends us staggering through life. Most of the time we bounce back. However, sometimes we do not recover.
In John 5:2-9, a man has been struggling for 38 years with his health. Jesus asks him, “Do you want to be made well?” His reply is not very satisfactory. The story raises questions about what role does God play and what role do we play in our own recovery.
God confronts each of us at some point in our lives with this question: Do we want to be made well? Sometimes we do have choices about our situations. Our choice may be to continue living in pain and brokenness or to do something about our situation. But making the correct choice can certainly be more painful in the short term. The need to change has to be greater than the need to remain the same.
My sermon addresses this issue this weekend. See you on Sunday!

18th Year for Back to School Project

Wow! It is hard to believe that the Back to School Project has been happening for 18 years. I guess I could do some calculations and come up with some pretty impressive numbers for all of you that like stats. However, that would require time and mental work and time, I now have, but that mental requirement is "out to lunch". So trust me when I say we have purchased, assembled, and distributed thousands of school kits over the last sixteen years.

For some of you that might be new to 1st UMC or to the Kirksville area, let me tell you a little bit about the Back to School Project. Originally "Campaign for Children" began under the leadership of the United Methodist Women. The first event was held in 1990 in the church basement and served around 60 students. They were provided with new socks and underwear, good used clothing, and school supplies. We have outgrown the church basement and now have many organizations that help co-sponsor this event. We are meeting the needs of over 400+ students annually.

This year the Back to School Fair will be held at the Primary School on Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We will have a work night on August 5th at 5 p.m. here at the church. At this time, all the kits will be assembled and the truck will be loaded in order to move the school kits to the Primary School the next day. Workers are needed to help assemble kits and load the boxes. This would be a wonderful service activity for Girl or Boy Scouts, a Sunday School class, group and/or individuals that are willing to serve. (This year we will be assembling 500 kits.) In addition, I am in need of adult volunteers to unload the school supplies at 9 a.m. at the school and volunteers to work the fair on Wednesday, Augsut 6th. If you or your group want to help in any way, please call Denise Comstock.

This year the following organizations have made significant contributions to this project so that we can continue to help the families in need in Adair County.
The United Way of Adair County
Kirksville Interchurch Ministries
Quota Club
Men's VFW
Women's VFW
Salvation Army

Of course, the last time I checked they were not giving away school supplies free at the stores. So, if you would like to contribute to this worthwhile project financially, you may send your donation to the church or place in the offering plate. Please indicate on your check or envelope "Back to School".

Last, but certainly not least, please continue to pray for the success of this project. Ask God to help us reach and serve the children in need in our community.

Denise Comstock
Back to School Coordinator

PLASTIC BAGS ARE NEEDED for this project! Please bring them to the church office by July 31st.
