NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
June 1, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
I am preparing to leave for Annual Conference as I write this devotion. Annual Conference is the key piece of the United Methodist Connection. It is made up of Clergy Members (clergy have their membership in the Annual Conference as opposed to a local church), and Lay Members - 50% of each. We will receive reports, give special missional offerings, participate in special worship services, recognize retirees, and ordain new persons for ministry, adopt a Conference budget (which promises to be smaller than this year's budget, so with the new Apportionment formula, our 2008 apportionments will be somewhat lower (PTL)), elect Delegates to next year's General and Jurisdictional Conferences, and visit with people we haven't seen for a year—all in all, a great week-end. You will be in my thoughts, however, and I know all will be well for you here; Lynae and others will give good leadership in my absence.
See ya' when I get back!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim
Sunday, June 3rd, our Pastoral Assistant, Lynae McFarland, will be bringing the message at both services. Celebration Choir will sing at the 8:15 service and Chancel Choir will sing at the 10:45 service. ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The MIssouri Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church meets in Springfield on June 1st-4th. Rev. Jim and Linda Robinson are attending. Carolyn Harding is our Lay Member to Annual Conference. Also attending from First UMC are Mark Twain District At-Large Lay Members Chuck Heckert, Jim Harding, and Marti Koch. Rev. Bill Koch, our Mark Twain District Superintendent,; Bob and Debbie Nothdurft, and Rev. Eric and Helen Schmidt. Rev. Dick and Mary Lou Detweiler, Rev. Leota Moore, and Rev. Glen and Twila Lochhead also may be attending. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO REV. JIM!
June 29th is Rev. Jim's birthday . To say thank you to him we will be taking a special offering the month of June. Our church is one of many across the nation that supports Strength for Service, a devotional book written for those in the service of others. More than 250,000 copies of this life-changing book have already been distributed overseas, but hundreds of thousands more are need for those currently serving stateside or abroad. Your donations will make a difference in the lives of our military men and women, our American heroes. Please indicate on your check that it is Rev. Jim's birthday offering. Also, there will be a wooden house in the Narthex where you can put your donations. We would like to have these collected by Sunday, June 24th.
