NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
September 19, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
Linda's sickness in recent days has reminded me, once again, of how blessed we are (Linda and I) to have so many special and supportive people in our lives. Your honest, authentic concern, best wishes, calls, inquiries, and prayers are most appreciated and very helpful. To date, these activities have not cured Linda physically, but they have helped emotionally and spiritually—they have been powerful reminders of the fact that you are God's people and as such, share God's love with us. Thank you! As you continue to pray us through this time, as you have several other times, we renew our covenant to continue such actions for you, as, and when, appropriate! It is a privilege that gives my life meaning to share your lives as you experience the challenges and celebrations of your everydays, in the context of striving to be Disciples of the Christ. As we share each other's lows and highs, ups and downs, good and bad, thoughts and prayers, we share the love of Christ. "If one member suffers, all suffer together, if one member is honored, all rejoice together" (I Cor. 12:26)
Our official, organized way of extending this care intentionally to those who might not otherwise receive it, having moved into a time and phase of life that prohibits their active church involvement, is called PACE ministry, as willing and committed persons are trained and commissioned for this ministry, loving membership care is extended to these persons. I am most grateful for these persons and this ministry, particularly for the new persons who joined the program this week, and will be thankful for new persons who are able to do so in the future as your schedules permit your participation, it is a powerful way to fulfill the membership vow of "service"!
See ya' Sunday!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim

BUY A BRICK! Five years ago we had a "Buy a Brick" campaign to help fund the decorating of our Sunday School classrooms. We have so many new families in our church since then and want to give them the opportunity to have their names on a brick, as well or give the opportunity again to those who were here 5 years ago. Our new curriculum for Club 3:16 and Sunday School involved the church having to buy over 50 Bibles for our children. This project will help us pay for our new Bibles. You can have one name on a brick, your families name, in honor or memory of someone you love. Please contact Miss Lynae. For all ages!!!

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY
This year we are using the "Hands On Bible" curriculum. Kids need to learn the truth to live it—HANDS on BIBLE takes kids right into the Bible. DON'T LET YOUR CHILD/REN MISS THIS! Sunday School at 9:30 a.m.
CLUB 3:16 began on Wednesday, September 19th at 3:00 p.m. This is an after school Wednesday program. We ask that parents help with snacks, and volunteer as helpers and drivers. This year we are using a BIBLE BLITZ curriculum that gets kids into the Bible each week and even better, gets the Bible into kids as they apply what they've learned! For children K-5th grade
KIDS' Night Out - Friday, September 21st - 5:30-8:00 p.m. This will be held the 3rd Friday of each month.
We will feed, love, and play with kids ages 6 weeks to 5th grade. Don't miss out on this great event!
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14th - CHILDREN'S SABBATH - Special things will be happening at First UMC
We will have our children and parents lead the worship service. Your family can help usher, take offering, sing special music and share a testimony. We are also going to be baptizing children on that day. It doesn't matter your age....it only matters where your heart is. Last year we baptized 8 beautiful children from ages 6 weeks to 7th grade. I pray you will consider to take this courageous step! You must let Miss Lynae or Rev. Jim know by October 7th. This is for all families with children of any ages!
MOM'S MORNING OUT - Wednesday, September 26th from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
On Monday, Sept. 24th, the Young Women’s Bible Study will begin its new season. At this 6 PM meeting, we will make plans for discussing the book “The Case for Faith” by Lee Strobel. This book is said to be a powerful, life-changing book which delves into the tougher questions that surround our faith. Each chapter explores an objection to believing. For example, chapter one is “since evil and suffering exist, a loving God cannot.” If you are not already involved in a small group or just want to explore this book with a great group of women, please join us on September 24th. Each year, new women join our group, and we welcome them. We are a diverse group of women. Some of us are married with no children, while others have married children, while still others are single. Some of us have established careers while others are still exploring their careers, and yet others are work-at-home moms. We come from Kirksville and from far away. We all enjoy laughing together, but are willing to mourn with each other. We pray for each other, and we celebrate together. You are sure to find someone like yourself in our group, and if not, then we welcome the increased diversity that will come from your presence.
If you’d like to participate in this study, but know that you will have to miss this first meeting, please email the YWBS coordinator, Teri Heckert, at theckert@truman.edu. Questions are also welcome. Please note that childcare is provided by the nursery staff during our meetings
REMEMBER THAT THE UMW RUMMAGE SALE WILL BE ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5th from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sarah Circle will be coordinating the sale. Please bring your items by noon on October 4th, beginning Monday, October 1st.
FALL DISTRICT MEETING
This year the UMW Fall meeting will be held at the Atlanta United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 13th. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the meeting beginning at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be at noon. The speaker will be Linda Roser who is the vice president of the community relations and development for Spofford of Kansas City. The focus for the in-gathering for Spofford will be keeping healthy and warm. Please bring the following items to be donated to Spofford. Liquid Benadryl, Socks, Children’s Tylenol, Underwear (including beginner bras) Chapstick, Sweatpants/Sweatshirts (no hoodies) (4T-16) Triple antibiotic cream, gently used, clean winter coats.
There will be a mission fair where various units will bring information about the types of missions they do. Bring your items about missions to the meeting. Registration needs to be turned in by Friday, October 5th. Please let Bev Kitts know if you would like to attend so carpooling can be arranged.
