NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
February 16, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
The word and concept of "preparation" is on my mind as I sit at computer and look out on the snowy, winter scene that we all are experiencing. The Scout Sunday observation last Sunday underlined this word and concept for me as we remember the Scouts' emphases on "being prepared". As the snow forecast was being given and heard earlier in the week, we were encouraged to be prepared for the upcoming storm, and so, I imagine, most of us did so, by going to the grocery store, etc., in the pre-storm time.
There are spiritual parallels of much more consequence that perhaps receive less attention. How important is it that we be prepared for living life on this earth in the fashion that God in Christ would have us? How is it that we are preparing for that? How is the church assisting that preparation? And, of course, there is the even larger issue of preparation for the life to come. We are all fans of Rick Warren these days, Pastor Warren says that the "purpose" of this life is to prepare for the one to come. It that is true, how are we doing? Individually? Corporately? How does this purpose impact our daily choices and behaviors?
Do we have it right with our words of purpose? Does it have to do with "Walking with Christ and Glorifying God"?
The Lenten time will afford 40 days to "ponder our preparation", and to make fresh choices and commitments, can we welcome such a time with the same enthusiasm that we will welcome the warmer weather of the Spring time?
See ya' Sunday!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim

WESLEY HOUSE SUNDAY SUPPERS
Check the sign-up sheet on the office window for times you can help the Wesley House Campus Ministry by providing food for their Sunday evening meal.
This is a great type of mission project for you and your family or your Sunday School class or group to be involved in. The students will appreciate a home-cooked meal and also enjoy visiting with you.
Please plan for 25-30 people. All you need to do is take the food to the Wesley House at 903 S. Davis. The students will help with the drinks and table service when you get there. The suggested time is by 5 p.m. as the meal is at 6 p.m. That will give you enough time to get things ready.
You may email Wesley at wesley@truman.edu or call 660-665-2331. This is a wonderful way to help our students!
