NEWS FROM FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, KIRKSVILLE
September 13, 2007
DEVOTION FROM REV. JIM
We just completed our Semi-Annual all Council/Committees Planning Meeting. As I write this devotion, my head is spinning with ideas and my spirit is renewed with excitement and hope. We heard stories of thanksgiving for the Lord's presence in the life of First UMC in the year that was, and thought about how the Lord will be with us in a new church year. We looked at a new Vision and Mission Statement, and a set of Core Values and Key Practices to guide our work and remind us of our faith. Then committees began their work around the room with calendars and ideas and hopes, new meeting dates were set, plans were discussed and God was present! You are a great people of God with wonderful people, staff and volunteers, ready to give of themselves completely once again as God leads and enables—thanks be to God!
See ya' Sunday!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Jim

BUY A BRICK! Five years ago we had a "Buy a Brick" campaign to help fund the decorating of our Sunday School classrooms. We have so many new families in our church since then and want to give them the opportunity to have their names on a brick, as well or give the opportunity again to those who were here 5 years ago. Our new curriculum for Club 3:16 and Sunday School involved the church having to buy over 50 Bibles for our children. This project will help us pay for our new Bibles. You can have one name on a brick, your families name, in honor or memory of someone you love. Please contact Miss Lynae. For all ages!!!

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY
This year we are using the "Hands On Bible" curriculum. Kids need to learn the truth to live it—HANDS on BIBLE takes kids right into the Bible. DON'T LET YOUR CHILD/REN MISS THIS! Sunday School at 9:30 a.m.
CLUB 3:16 Begins on Wednesday, September 19th at 3:00 p.m. This is an after school Wednesday program. We ask that parents help with snacks, and volunteer as helpers and drivers. This year we are using a BIBLE BLITZ curriculum that gets kids into the Bible each week and even better, gets the Bible into kids as they apply what they've learned! For children K-5th grade
KIDS' Night Out - Friday, September 21st - 5:30-8:00 p.m. This will be held the 3rd Friday of each month.
We will feed, love, and play with kids ages 6 weeks to 5th grade. Don't miss out on this great event!
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14th - CHILDREN'S SABBATH - Special things will be happening at First UMC
We will have our children and parents lead the worship service. Your family can help usher, take offering, sing special music and share a testimony. We are also going to be baptizing children on that day. It doesn't matter your age....it only matters where your heart is. Last year we baptized 8 beautiful children from ages 6 weeks to 7th grade. I pray you will consider to take this courageous step! You must let Miss Lynae or Rev. Jim know by October 7th. This is for all families with children of any ages!

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
UMW Executive Board will meet on Wednesday, September 19th at 2 p.m.
On Monday, Sept. 24th, the Young Women’s Bible Study will begin its new season. At this 6 PM meeting, we will make plans for discussing the book “The Case for Faith” by Lee Strobel. This book is said to be a powerful, life-changing book which delves into the tougher questions that surround our faith. Each chapter explores an objection to believing. For example, chapter one is “since evil and suffering exist, a loving God cannot.” If you are not already involved in a small group or just want to explore this book with a great group of women, please join us on September 24th. Each year, new women join our group, and we welcome them. We are a diverse group of women. Some of us are married with no children, while others have married children, while still others are single. Some of us have established careers while others are still exploring their careers, and yet others are work-at-home moms. We come from Kirksville and from far away. We all enjoy laughing together, but are willing to mourn with each other. We pray for each other, and we celebrate together. You are sure to find someone like yourself in our group, and if not, then we welcome the increased diversity that will come from your presence.
If you’d like to participate in this study, but know that you will have to miss this first meeting, please contact the YWBS coordinator, Teri Heckert. Questions are also welcome. Please note that childcare is provided by the nursery staff during our meetings.
REMEMBER THAT THE UMW RUMMAGE SALE WILL BE ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5th from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sarah Circle will be coordinating the sale. Please bring your items by noon on October 4th, beginning Monday, October 1st.
