Sunday School Classes

Toddlers and Two's                                           6th Grade

Children’s Sunday School

The Children’s Sunday School Program at First Church begins with a class for ages one year through 2.9 months.  This class has grown so much that the teachers felt the need to split the class.  Thus, one group consists of ages one year through 2.4 months, and the second group is ages 2.5 through 2.9 months.  Next, we have separate classrooms for the preschool, kindergarten, and every elementary class through sixth grade.  We currently have 23 dedicated teachers on our roster who are committed to bringing the best Christian education possible to our children.

Along with study about God and Jesus, our children have the opportunity to apply their learning through service projects directed by their classroom staff or volunteers from adult classes.  The children collect change every Sunday for the American Rescue Workers.  Also, the third grade Sunday School class sponsors an annual bake sale for the Pee Dee Mission, Rescue Mission and the lending library for children.

The children join together in various song sessions, and on very special Sundays they have performed in the Sanctuary for the 9:30 a.m. church service.  The children also enjoy taking a walk down to our lending library.

Besides hearing beautiful music, a you walk down the hallway and peek into the classrooms, you could witness the students sitting in a circle hearing a Bible story, working on a special craft together, playing a game, or just having fun being together in God’s house.

Junior High Class

Junior High Class

We’re a large Sunday School of seventh, eighth and ninth graders that represent several schools in the area.

We explore Christ’s message and figure out how we can apply it to our everyday lives.  We are ambitiously learning about ourselves and how we can influence the world around us.  We are discovering how to be messengers of Christ by what we say and do.  We are learning all of this by digging into the Bible, playing games and performing skits.

We are many personalities and opinions and hope you will join us to share yours.

Senior High Class

Senior High Class

Our Senior High Sunday School Class meets every Sunday morning in the Campbell House for grades 10 through 12.  In our lessons we explore issues that youth face today such as sexual purity, the influence of television and movies on the morality of society, living the Christian life, the second coming of Christ, and spreading the Gospel.  Issues are explored by seeking Christian media such as videos and contemporary Christian music as well as class discussion and games.  Emphasis is placed on how we can live each day for Jesus and influence those around us to be part of His kingdom and overcome evil with good.  Bible reading and prayer are a part of every class.  Also, students are informed of Youth Group activities and participation is encouraged.

Challengers Adult Class

We are a Sunday School class that enjoys discussing relevant ideas.  This is an unstructured class where everyone participates.  We meet on the exit ramp from the social room to the Lending Library.  We discuss (argue, rarely agree) topics from Faith Link, which is found on the Internet.  We take turns leading the discussion.  If you think you are up to the “challenge”, please join us next Sunday.

First Stop Adult Class

First Stop Sunday School is a discussion based study group.  We are a very diverse group of people with different perspectives.  Working through a variety of study guides, we enjoy what each of us brings to the conversation to help us grow in our relationship with Christ.  Come bring your unique background and add a new dynamic to our fun and lively group.

King's Daughters Adult Class

We are a class of adult women who are actively and joyfully pursuing our faith journey.  We use the International Sunday School Lesson as the basis of our weekly study on how to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.  “The International Lesson” is the basis of what makes our class “different” or “special”.  Would you like to renew your acquaintance with the personalities and events of the Bible?  Do you want to rediscover God’s great plan for His creation or how, by faith and obedience a people called to be His own came to accept the salvation of God’s son, Jesus, and followed him?  If so, we invite all women to join us as we examine and discuss how these lessons from the Old and New Testaments are still relevant to the Christian life today.  Do join us.  We learn “a little”.  We enjoy “a lot”.

Lost and Found Adult Class

The Lost and Found Sunday School Class is a group of “30-something” individuals, many of us raising children (toddlers to teenagers) in today’s changing society.  Our focus of study varies, from contemporary issues to traditional Bible study or family/parenting themes.  We often share the leadership role of teaching in our open forum class.  Our class is located just off the Social room, (close to the donuts and coffee).  Anyone interested is welcome to join us.  Contact Booker Moore 696-7086 for more information.

Martz Adult Class

This class is almost 80 years old and is named for its first teacher J. A. Martz, who was a building contractor in Hollidaysburg.  We follow the discussion method in the study of the International Sunday School Lesson series which we endeavor to apply to present day living.  We are a group of senior men, but all men are welcome to join us.

Searchers Adult Class

We’re single, married, divorced, parents and grandparents ranging in age from 30 to 60.  Most of us have been there, done that, but we are all very young at heart.  Our two co-teachers, Fred Corbin and Jim Coley sometimes find it difficult to control this lively group.  We enjoy our friendship and are an active support system for each other outside the Church building as well.  We plan lots of events as a group and enjoy sharing our joys and concerns in our lives.  We laugh and we cry.  A good sense of humor is helpful to “put up” with us!  We currently hold two chicken dinner sales each year, which benefit the local Rescue Workers and Young Life of Central Pennsylvania.  Through the World Vision organization, we’ve helped to support four children through their school years.  We love visitors and invite you to join us.  We are always “searching” for new and interesting viewpoints.

Common Vision Adult Class

In October of 2002 a new Sunday School Class began at First UMC.  After deliberating over a name for this newly formed class, the members decided on "Common Vision" since all seemed to have the same desire to be involved in a traditional Bible study group.  Each Sunday, members continue to delve into the Bible, which results in a myriad of conversations and challenging discussions.  We laugh, we cry, and above all we gain insight into God's word.  This class is unique in the fact that approximately 90% of the members share the teaching responsibilities.  And the members who have not yet taught, provide much needed encouragement and input during class time.  To date, "Common Vision" has had a average attendance of 16 people.  There are a variety of ages as well as both singles and married couples who attend.  We meet in the former Youth Sunday School Classroom - close to the Computer Lab.  if you are looking for a Sunday School class and enjoy the traditional Bible study arena, the common Vision Sunday School class members would like to invite you to visit and perhaps become a part of our new group.
