Frequently Asked Questions  Jesus Knocking

Spiritual Issues

Q: How do I know if I have eternal life?
A: Do you hear Jesus knocking at your heart's door? Jesus said, "Here I am!  I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." Rev. 3:20 Ask yourself the following questions: 1)  Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin?  2)  Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves?  3)  Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races? Will you pray the following prayer from your heart?  “Dear Lord Jesus, I come to you just as I am.  Forgive my unfaithfulness in not having done your will.  I here from the bottom of my heart turn away from all my sin, promising you that no known sin will be allowed in my life.  Let me be your servant, under your command. I will no longer be my own.  I will give up myself to your will in all things.  Before all heaven and earth, I here acknowledge you as my Lord and God, and vow to give up myself, body and soul, as your servant, to serve you in holiness and righteousness all the days of my life. O blessed Jesus, I come to you, hungry, sinful, miserable, blind, and naked, unworthy even to wash the feet of your servants. And now, glory be to you, O God the Son, who loved me and washed me from my sins in your own blood.  Glory be to you, O God the Holy Spirit,  who by your almighty power turned my heart from sin to God. Glory be to you, O God the Father, whom I will look upon as my God and Father from this day forward.   Let the promise I have now made on earth be ratified in heaven.*  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”                                      Come worship with us at First Church and share your faith!                                                                                                *Prayer adapted from the COVENANT RENEWAL SERVICE, John Wesley, 1753.

Q: Why is the church called United Methodist?
A: The United Methodist Church was created on April 23, 1968,  when  The Evangelical United Brethren Church, and The Methodist Church merged. The denomination  shares a common history and heritage with other Methodist and Wesleyan bodies. The lives and ministries of John Wesley (1703-1791) and of his brother, Charles (1707-1788), mark the origin of their common roots.  For more information click here.
