Be a Special Kind of Volunteer |
Home among family and friends is where those with terminal illness usually prefer to be. Caring for a terminally ill loved one in the home, however, can be very stressful for the caregiver. The RMH Hospice program provides trained volunteers to assist with this care. Volunteers give up to four hours a week to provide respite care for families so caregivers have a break. Volunteers may help by running errands, mowing the lawn, reading to patients, picking up prescriptions, making phone calls, or providing bereavement support for the family. Volunteers also help in the Hospice office with administrative tasks and picking up medical equipment from homes after a death. If you prefer not to make home visits, consider becoming a bereavement volunteer. These volunteers, who have received special training in grief and loss, can make calls from home to families who are struggling through the first year of grief after the death of a loved one.
