DIYIN GOD BIZAAD
(Navajo Bibles)
For $21 (plus
shipping), you can invest
in a leather-bound Navajo Bible published by
the American Bible Society for distribution to
individual Navajos in our ministry. These bibles are
greatly popular, and we are currently in need of
more. You may either send money to the FCNAM
ministry office or purchase the bibles directly from the
American Bible Society (see link below) and have

Sandy Jackson of the
General Board of Discipleship of the
United Methodist Church, Nashville, TN and
author of the Basic Course of the Lay
Speaking Ministries was the special guest
speaker for our Leadership Training Event at Shiprock
UMC on September 26. Sandy introduced the program and
lead some 40 attendees through the first session of
the Basic Course, which will become the foundational
curriculum of our leadership training program. While
visiting the Four Corners area, Sandy also provided the
Sunday morning message at Ojo Amarillo UMC and Shiprock
UMC as well as leading an
Albuquerque DCOM-sponsored gathering at Bloomfield
UMC on the Certified Lay

Shiprock Fair Celebrates Navajo
Culture
The Navajo Nation
and thousands of its friends and supporters
converged on Shiprock, September 25 - October 4, for the
98th Annual Shiprock Navajo Fair with its theme, A
Salute to Diné Heritage. The week-long fair included
traditional Navajo dancing (Ye'ii Bi Chei), an all
Nations pow-wow, a rodeo, markets,
pageants, agricultural contests and alot of family
reunions. Members of the Shiprock UMC began parade day
(October 3) at 4am setting up their 'chuckwagon' on
the parade route in front of the ministry office and
selling breakfast buritos as a fundraiser for the
Shiprock church (see photo above of Ada, Frank and
Fanny). The tent revival ministry of the Rev. Roger
Tsosie, pastor of the Window Rock UMC, entered the
parade with a float sharing live gospel music (see
below). Window Rock UMC and Sawmill UMC also
participated the Navajo Nation Fair in Window Rock, AZ
held in September.

Commissioning of FCNAM US-2
missionary, Heather Bishop, to be live internet
broadcast
On October 14, FCNAM will
receive Heather Bishop as a two-year US-2
missionary through the General Board of Global
Ministries. Although Heather will be properly
introduced in future correspondences, this is the first
time that a service of commissioning of United Methodist
missionaries, deaconesses and home missioners will be
broadcast live on the internet.
The service will take place
on Tuesday, October 13, during the annual meeting of
directors of the General Board of Global Ministries, in
Stamford, Connecticut at 7:00 p.m. EDT. Thirty-one
missionaries, seven deaconesses and two home
missioners will be commissioned.
The
webcast provides an opportunity for United Methodists to
take part virtually in the sacred experience of blessing
and commitment inherent in Christian
commissioning. Additional details on the
commissioning service can be found online at:

Horizons: Views from Shiprock
With the simultaneous
arrival of the autumnal winds and
the thousands of pilgrims for the
Shiprock fair merging on the
dirt-covered fairgrounds, the recent views
from Shiprock have literally been ones of
dusty haze. With afternoon temperatures still
rather warm, thoughts of water are never far
away.
On this front, good news
came to the reservation this past week. On
October 1, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar joined
New Mexico's congressional delegation to advance a vital
water supply project that will provide clean, safe and
reliable water to a quarter of a million people in the
Navajo Nation, the City of Gallup and the Jicarilla
Apache Nation. The action clears the way for
resolving the Navajo Nation's long-standing water rights
claims in the state. More information on the
Navajo water project can be found at:
