The
Lord’s Day
8th Sunday after Pentecost
____________________________________________________________________________
July 6, 2008
8:30 & 11:00 a.m.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his
book The Cost of Discipleship, writes:
“Cheap grace is the preaching
of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without
church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution
with personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without
discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus
Christ, living and incamate.
Too often we fall into the
snare of cheap grace. We know that at the heart of the
gospel is forgiveness, and we presume upon God’s grace and
begin to act as though God is obligated to show us favor.
We forget that God does not owe us anything. God is not
obliged to pity or to pardon. God offers forgiveness, it is
not because of who we are or what we have done, it is
because of who God is and God’s steadfast love that endures
forever…even in spite of us.”
