Church History
Shortly after the Civil War, Methodist ministers and laymen from New Haven met with brethren of West Haven in the home of Henry H. Richards. There seemed to be sufficient interest to warrant the organization of a Methodist Episcopal Church. Thus it was on
September 21, 1868, just one hundred years from the time that the first Methodist Episcopal Church had its beginnings in New York and Philadelphia that this group of earnest worshippers lighted their flickering candle of Methodism in West Haven. The object of the little band that lighted it was to light a way whereby all might find their way to God.
