JAIL MINISTRIES

The purpose of United Methodist Jail Ministries is to be the presence and witness of Jesus Christ to prisoners and their families.

--a unique ministry to a unique, misunderstood, and often forgotten segment of God's people--

Specifically what we do is:
  • -- host a worship service once a month at the jail chapel
  • -- extend God's love to the prisoners by cards made by Sunday School children
  • -- provide emergency hygiene packets for indigent inmates
  • -- provide one-on-one counseling and short term Bible studies by our outreach worker within the jail
  • create and supply "Cell Block Services" so inmates can bold their own mid-week worship services and Bible studies within their cell blocks
United Methodist Jail Ministries began at Faith United Methodist Church in northwest Indianapolis, Indiana in 1986 when the children of the church made Christmas cards for jail inmates. Faith began holding a bi-monthly worship service at the jail, and then invited other churches to join. From that humble beginning, the Jail Ministry has expanded to include some 30 United Methodist Churches in the Indianapolis area. Other jail ministries by United Methodist Churches are springing up in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, and Johnson Counties surrounding Indianapolis and Marion County.
