INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY

Interfaith Hospitality Network is a national program founded in 1988 in New Jersey as a community response to the homelessness. In 1994, Indianapolis joined the national effort. The IHN program is an effective way for the religious community to offer shelder, meals, and assistance to the homeless families. The program uses churches ( like Faith UMC) and Synagogues for overnight lodging and the congregation's volunteers provide the meals, Social Service Agencies provide screening and referrals and the day center works with the families to obtain the jobs and housing. Many existing shelters accommodate men or women and children but very few allow families to stay together, IHN.. The principal goals of IHN are: to provide temporary shelter suitable for qualified families, to assist at least 70% of the families served to obtain suitable permanent housing and to refer the homeless families to the appropriate agencies for assistance and job training/recruitment.
