History

In 1956, a community survey of the developing Fairlawn area was taken. With an interest indicated, the first worship service was held on October 7, 1956 in the cafeteria of Fairlawn Elemntary School. Immediate plans were launched for a new church and an organizational meeting followed on November 4, 1956. Construction of the present parsonage started after a dedication of the land was held on January 13, 1957.

The upstairs rooms of the parsonage became classrooms, the basement was used for fellowship and the garage and two adjacent rooms served as the sanctuary. The first worship servcie in the new church (parsonage) was on April 28, 1957. The charter membership listed 81 dedicated members.

Enthusiasm was present and immediate plans were started for the construction of the unit now used for the day care. This building was completed in 1959 and for approximately ten years, this was the church with the parsonage next door. In the mid-1960s, the congregation, continuing to dream, developed plans for the present sanctuary and educational unit.

Consecration services were held for the sanctuary and educational building on October 17, 1968. The former educational unit became the University of Evansville Day Care Center. Sponsorship of the day care transferred to the church in 1990 and is now the Fairlawn Children's Center. Taken from the 1995-1996 FUMC directory

Fairlawn UMC would seem to have little in common with the prayer station of a hundred years earlier; however, the spirit of those churches, the spirit of community growth and hard work, lives on at Fairlawn. Largely a neighborhood or area church, Fairlawn is made up of loyal members and friends who consider the church an integral part of their daily community. Its members are family oriented, hardworking and proud of their lives, their church and their relationship with Christ. Fairlawn is known for it's overwhelming friendliness and willingness to welcome new people into the family.

Though its roots do not extend so deeply as older churches, its roots in Christ, in love, in tradition, and in devotion are nonetheless strong and continue to grow.
