CHALLENGE SUNDAY

March 22, 2009

THIS IS A CHANGE! Challenge Sunday is a tradition begun several years ago by Jo Ann Robinson. Jo Ann was really aware of the need to build the church membership. She and Alan Loehr got together to figure out a program to bring in more people. They came up with a challenge! That first challenge was to invite enough people to have 150 in church. And if they could make that goal, Alan and John Horn would walk from Grove to Fairland (10 miles +) for the Walk of Faith. They made the goal and John and Alan made the walk!!! This is the tradition that brings us to the 2009 Challenge. On Challenge Sunday 2008 we had 175 in church. We really, really would like to have 200 this year–some have suggested 209 for 2009! Can we do it? I think we can! Let’s all invite as many as possible for Sunday, March 22 to our Challenge Sunday followed by a delicious dinner.

MISSIONS UPDATE

One Great Hour of Sharing. The entire offering for "One Great Hour of Sharing" goes to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. And March is the month designated for that offering. The Committee on Relief (UMCOR) helps millions of people around the world by responding to catastrophic disasters such as floods, tornados, civil unrest and violence, refugee crises, landslides, earthquakes, and famine. UMCOR helps long after media coverage and public concern has ended.

Our March offering provides the funding so UMCOR can respond immediately to disasters as they happen. It also provides funds for other mission projects such as providing water for livestock and crop irrigation, supporting community health projects, assisting children who have HIV/AIDS and others who have mental or physical disabilities. It helps people who strive to feed and support themselves and their families.

The continued ministry of the UMCOR program depends on our participation in One Great Hour of Sharing. It will be received the entire month of March.

TORNADO OFFERING. If you wish to give directly to the Lone Grove tornado, we have already collected some offering for that disaster. We will be sending in that money in March also.

BACKPACK PROGRAM. Our backpack program continues! We now are serving 15 children in the Fairland School system that need extra food in the form of "snacks" for the weekends. The program is much appreciated by all the recipients. Please sign the list at the back of the Church for our Friday deliveries! Elizabeth Love
