Worship ServicesPrimary Worship CelebrationOur primary congregational worship experience starts at 10:45 a.m. each Sunday, and extends for about an hour. Traditional forms of worship form the core of this service, and the experience of the participants is enhanced and reinforced through extensive use of various media projected on video screens. In this and every other congregational worship service, we seek to experience the immediate and life-giving presence of God, and to be transformed as individuals and as a people by God's love, care and challenge as experienced in God's presence among us and within us. Children's Church is available during our Primary Worship Celebration for children age 4 years through Third Grade. Children in Fourth Grade and older generally stay to worship with their families, so that they can be fully included in the congregation and the traditions of the church as the Body of Christ. In addition to Children's Church, child care is available for children age 3 years and younger. Communion ChapelWe celebrate Holy Communion each Sunday morning in a chapel service starting at 8:30 a.m. and extending for about 45 minutes. This chapel service does not center on preaching, but rather on Holy Communion itself, with the Scripture, prayer, meditation and congregational song that are part of the Communion experience. We believe that Jesus invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin, and who seek to live in peace with one another. We also believe that Holy Communion is a means of experiencing God's grace, presence and love; and that Holy Communion can be a means of conversion, reconciliation and renewal to new life in Christ. Consequently, Holy Communion in The United Methodist Church is open to all (including children), not just to adult members of this congregation or of The United Methodist Church. Prayer and Healing ServiceOn the first Thursday of each month we offer a Prayer and Healing Service in the Taizè tradition starting at 6:45 p.m. This worship service usually extends for about an hour. The Taizè Community is an ecumenical monastic community in Taizè, France that, among other things, has been instrumental in recent years in bringing spiritual renewal and growth (especially among younger people) through experiential worship using ancient traditions. Worship in the Taizè style and tradition is centered on Scripture, meditation, and congregational singing. Worship for Special Days, Times and SeasonsCongregational worship (also known as "corporate worship") occurs at various times during the year in connection with certain special days, times or seasons. Some of these special worship services include:
Worship in Small GroupsNot all corporate worship occurs in the gathered congregation as a whole. Whenever two or more gather at Englewood United Methodist Church, we seek to center our activities and work in worshipful experience of God's immediate and transforming presence. This "small group" worship occurs not only in connection with meetings of official committees, but also in various Small Covenant Groups that have formed and continue to form for study, growth, service, prayer and fellowship.
Personal WorshipPersonal worship is just as important as worshipping with a small group or in a congregational gathering. It cannot substitute for those experiences of corporate worship, though, because Christianity (unlike some other world religions) cannot be fully practiced or experienced outside the gathered Body of Christ. Personal worship is not just prayer focused on talking at God, but rather includes (among other things) meditatively sitting in the presence of God, study, and other Spiritual Disciplines, as well as regular practice of formal personal worship in the form of daily devotions.
