Lent ...
... is a period or season of 40 days (not counting Sundays)
preceding Easter. Lent begins on
Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy
Saturday, the day before Easter.
It is a time of preparation for
celebrating the resurrection and new life of Easter, by confession,
penance, and seeking reconciliation and new direction. In the early
days of Christianity, Lent was a time of fasting, education,
assimilation and preparation of converts for baptism, which typically
occurred at Easter or during the Vigil immediately preceding Easter.
Lent later became a time of penance for all Christians.
