The Way of Jesus

an ancient / contemporary process of making disciples
at
Epworth LeSourd United Methodist Church
Lent, 2008

The Way of Jesus is a nine-week, small group experience designed to:
  • Help a seeker grow toward discipleship
  • Guide a new or young Christian to a deeper faith
  • Provide a “new springtime” of faith for a life-long disciple

“I am the Way, the truth and the life.”

“The Way” Style & Schedule

  • The Way begins on Sunday, January 20, at 9:30 a.m.. Each participant will be called forward in the morning worship service for a blessing and prayer at the beginning of the series.
  • Each participant will receive a weekly readings notebook containing poems and articles dealing with some vital aspects of Christian life.
  • After the first Sunday, The Way meets each Sunday in the Fireplace Room, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and then again immediately following worship (with time to grab a cup of coffee and a brief visit, of course!) for about a half-hour.
  • A typical Sunday morning session begins with a time of quiet centering using a poem. We reflect together about our readings for the week, and how their subject can be made more fully a part of our lives.
  • The after-worship portion of the Sunday session includes centering prayer, and talk together about the worship service we experienced together that morning. We reflect together about the scripture we heard, read and preached, the music, and the prayer. In theis way we use the common experience of worship to examine our life in faith.
  • A mid-week session will be arranged if there’s interest.
  • The Day Apart. A Saturday apart will be scheduled for early or mid-March. It will be a day of quiet, conversation, walking, sitting, and food!
  • Holy Week: All participants are expected to make every effort to attend all Holy Week services, from Palm Sunday through Easter Day.
  • Palm Sunday, March 16th
  • Holy Thursday, March 20th
  • Good Friday, March 21st
  • Easter Day, March 23rd
  • The First Service of Easter in the early morning on Easter day is a very special service for the whole church, and especially for members of The Way. On this morning members of The Way are baptized, or reaffirm their baptism.

A Time for Discovery & Destiny
    Discovery ....
a place for individuals to discover themselves: their gifts, personalities, beliefs, values, and self-worth, as they discover their connection with God, the person of Christ, and the touch of the Holy.

    Destiny ....
a place for individuals to listen to their callings to use their gifts in ways that benefit others, and seek to discern their place in God’s greater purpose of healing and grace in the world.

    The Way of Jesus

  • is a safe environment that welcomes your struggles and questions
  • offers a time of encouragement for you in your faith journey
  • nurtures you into faith community
  • offers models and practices of prayer and spiritual disciplines
  • helps you discern your unique gifts and celebrate your calling to ministry
