VCM-800 TERRORISM AND THE GOSPEL (Ben Weir) (Y/A); 6 sessions, 90 min.; Guide; Kerr Assoc., 1987.

A six-session video study featuring the experiences and commentary of Lebanon hostage Rev. Benjamin Weir and his wife Carol. The viewer studies the issues of: living the Christian faith in a world of conflict, forgiveness and peace-making, the middle East and terrorism, and the Christian faith and American foreign policy.

VCM-801 WHY WE CARE SERIES- (Y/A); 30 min. ea.; UMCOM, 1992.

Although this series on social concerns discusses some United Methodist programs, it may be used ecumenically to show ways in which the problems addressed can be dealt with.

.1 WHY WE CARE: ABOUT AIDS- A small-town grandmother finds strength and new understanding about discrimination through her own personal encounter with AIDS. An urban pastor reaches out to youngsters traumatized by AIDS. A mother whose child has AIDS deals with her loss by helping other parents who have lost children to AIDS.

.2 WHY WE CARE: ABOUT REFUGEES- A compassionate account of those searching for freedom and peace. Stories of refugee families from El Salvador, Ethiopia, and Haiti are told, along with the testimonies of those who reached out to help.

.3 WHY WE CARE: ABOUT WOMEN IN PRISON- Awareness of the alarming increase in the number of women in prison–many of them single mothers– motivated a group of Methodist Women to provide a ministry with the women and with their children on the outside.

.4 WHY WE CARE: ABOUT CHILDREN AND EDUCATION- In Mexico City, Pastor Isabel Ramirez took her love for God and used it to reach out to children that others had forgotten. Operation Classroom, a project that brings needed tools for learning to children in Liberia and Sierra Leone, also gives children in Indiana an opportunity to experience what it means to give to others.

.5 WHY WE CARE: ABOUT DISASTER RELIEF- Shows the work of the United Methodist Committee on Relief in response to Hurricanes Andrew and Iniki.

.6 WHY WE CARE: ABOUT MIDWESTERN FLOODS- Heart-breaking scenes of midwestern flooding are intermingled with scenes of people helping each other. Although it shows the work of UMCOR, The United Methodist Committee on Relief, it can be used to show the response of any church in times of disaster.

.7 WHY WE CARE: ABOUT NORTHERN IRELAND This edition, shot in Belfast, focuses on the conflict between Catholics and Protestants popularly known as "The Troubles." It highlights the work of the Central Belfast Mission of the Methodist Church in the struggle for peace.

.8 CHILDREN AND CRISIS- 1992.

After a segment on Guatemala, this video moves to street children in Brazil. It looks at killing of children on the street and survival education--the use of dance, art, theater, puppets in a project in Sao Paulo. A very helpful look at how to use the arts as an essential component of a program to reach out to street children.

.9 WHY WE CARE: MISSIONARIES- The video illustrates United Methodists in a variety of mission assignments/ activities such as rebuilding churches after the Los Angeles Riots in 1992, working with the homeless and being involved in community development as an expression of faith

.10 WHY WE CARE ABOUT THE CHURCH IN MEXICO- (A); 27 min.; No Guide; UMCOM, 2002.

Meet members of three local churches of the United Methodist Church of Mexico who are addressing local issues and problems. The issues include hunger and poverty, border issues and homelessness, and preserving indigenous culture and environmental integrity in the midst of outside influences.

A series of dynamic discussion videos that go beyond the headlines and get people talking, thinking, and acting on pivotal issues of today.

.1 HOPE FOR BOSNIA- (1995) Although the war in Bosnia is not a religious war, people of faith are drawn into the conflict often based on their religious loyalties. The horror of "ethnic cleansing" is depicted, along with complications related to each of the 3 major groups involved in this struggle. Shows the witness of the church in a multi-racial society.

.2 RACISM- (1993) Explores prejudice and white privilege and how they affect jobs, expectations in education, the judicial system, and the church.

.3 TV VIOLENCE AND YOU- (1995) Examines the business side of television and beyond to issues we don't often think about. Some issues examined are: 1. why stockholders control what we see 2. the most damaging kind of violence .3 the effect of TV on relationships between men and women.

.4 TV VIOLENCE AND YOUR CHILD- (1995) Examines what kids are learning from TV violence and how you can lessen its powerful influence in your home, church, and community.

.5 PARENTING ADOLESCENTS- (1997-56 min.) For use in intergenerational groups with parents and teens, for parenting classes, and for families. The discussion guide includes a section for intergenerational discussion and questions for adult groups. The video is a new look at how teens and parents think and get along. There is a special 11-minute bonus for youth leaders which emphasizes the role of the whole congregation in supporting families, mentoring teens and encouraging service.

.6 MONEY- (1997-55 min.) The video presents ten lessons on the choices we make about money. Some topics included are: Factors influencing our thinking about money, Stewardship, How much wealth is enough?, and Teaching children to understand the difference between needs and desires.

.7 HOMELESSNESS- (1994-30 min.) Karina O'Malley, sociology professor, gives statistics and shares experiences from her 30-year involvement with the homeless and offers realistic suggestions for our response. Robert and Eudora Haywood, former homeless couple, tell how they were treated when on the street and about their life now. Maggie Day talks about the new homeless. Elmer Miller tells how he became director of a homeless shelter and Jane Pritchard describes how she uses her medical skills to serve the homeless.

.8 IMMIGRATION- (1999-54 min.) This video answers many of the questions that viewers have about immigration. Some of these questions are: Why do people leave their countries to come to the U.S.? What do immigrants have to offer? What is the role of the church? The six segments are: The Border, Economics, The Working Immigrant, Political Asylum, Resettlement, From Fear to Dreams.

.9 FACING DEATH- (1999- 34 min.) Listening to stories of those who have faced death will open the way for a viewer to talk with friends and family about this inevitable experience. In "Sandy's Story" relationships take priority as Sandy and her husband share how Sandy's cancer affects their lives. In "A Good Death" a family cares for their dying mother in their home. In "Prepared for Death" Moses has built his own coffin and made his own funeral plans. A pastor, doctor, and funeral director discuss making decisions about the end of life.

.10 SEXUAL ABUSE- (1993 21 min.) True stories of survivors and perpetrators portrayed by actors. Psychotherapist and author Carolyn Heggin shares new perspectives on working with the issue.

.11 FIREARMS VIOLENCE- (1994-33 min.); Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., studies the statistics, defines the issue, and offers solutions. The video introduces people who are working against gun violence and offers suggestions for responding from a faith perspective.

.12 MURDER CLOSE-UP- (1995 35 min.); After viewing this hard-hitting study of murder and its aftermath, the viewer begins to ponder whether the death penalty is ever right; whether it actually deters crime The video shows how the hearts of some people have turned from stone to love. You will meet family members of victim’s families, such as Bernice King, Sister Helen Prejean, and others

This 6-part series gives the viewer a real understanding of the Arab world and shows clearly the need for ministry and mission. A Force More Powerful is a two-part documentary series on one of the 20th century's most important stories of how non-violent power overcame oppression and authoritarian rule.

.1 Story 1- By non-violent means, black college students in Nashville successfully desegregated downtown lunch counters in 5 months.

Story 2- In India in the 1930's, Gandhi and his followers adopted a strategy of refusing to cooperate with British rule. Through civil disobedience and boycotts, they set India on a path to freedom.

Story 3- In 1985 a young South African named Mkhuseli Jack led a non-violent movement against apartheid.

.2 Story 1- In 1940 German military forces invaded Denmark. Danish leaders adopted a strategy of "resistance disguised as collaboration." Underground resistance rescued all but a handful of Denmark's 7,000 Jews.

Story 2- In 1980 striking workers in Poland demanded independent unions called "Solidarity." Driven underground by a government crackdown in 1981, Solidarity reemerged in 1989 as Poland's governing political party.

Story 3 In 1983 Chilean workers initiated a wave of non-violent protests against the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. The democratic opposition organized to defeat Pinochet in 1988 in a non-violent referendum.

This AIDS curriculum is specifically designed for Christian education settings. Although the video is for adults, there are curriculum guides for pre-school through adults, including separate guides for parents and intergenerational programs.

.1 LEARNING ABOUT AIDS (28 min.)- This video is designed not to entertain, but to give comprehensive information. It offers an uncensored, factual introduction to AIDS awareness and prevention.

.2 IN THE DAYS OF ADVERSITY (44 min.)- In this video the viewer meets six people for whom HIV/AIDS is a daily reality. Their faith, hope, love, and disarming honesty will inspire. and their insights gained from living in adversity will be challenging.
