This series is designed to inform and to encourage lively discussion on relevant philosophical themes regarding the confrontation of science and faith. Astronomer Adam Ford, author of Universe: God's Science and the Human Person narrates. Other distinguished theologians and scientists are: Paul Davis - Physicist; John Polkinghorne - Physicist; Stephen Hawkins - Mathematician and Astronomer; Anthony Hewish - Professor of Radio Astronomy; John Durant - Evolutionary Theorist. Each segment is introduced by British TV celebrity Anna Ford.

.1 AN EXPLANATION OF SCIENCE AND BELIEF-DOES GOD EXIST?- A general introduction to the question of whether science and religion can coexist or whether they are inevitably and unalterably opposed to each other. Video affirms that science and religion have never been totally incompatible.

.2 PAIN AND PURPOSE- The permanent problem of pain is explored. Includes a discussion of the relationship of God to human suffering Talks about the cross as an instrument of torture.

Shows how scientists bring together the spheres of science and religion in their everyday lives. Accompanying booklet has a set of 10 devotions with Bible text and a set of provocative study questions. Filmed at the Space Center and Clear Lake Church.

This series of videos reinforces the viewer's belief in God as a powerful creator of a world full of wonders.

.1 PLANET EARTH: SANCTUARY OF LIFE- Gives the viewer a memorable tour of the planet in which hidden miracles absolutely vital to survival are revealed.

.2 ANIMAL KINGDOM- Throughout the animal kingdom, God's provision and craftsmanship are widely displayed.

.3 HUMAN LIFE- Video reveals God's creative power magnificently expressed in the human mind and body.

.1 THE THREE PARABLES: TECHNOLOGICAL DISASTERS: HUMAN-MADE AND PREVENT-ABLE- (A); 22 min.; Guide. Church World Service Disaster Response.

Introduces the viewer to the complex set of psychological, social and physical events experienced by victims of human-caused technological disaster. The California parable involves agricultural contamination of water; the Louisiana parable chronicles industrial pollution; the Alaska parable depicts destruction caused by the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

.2 THE UNFOLDING STORY- (A); 29 min.; Baylands Production, 1993. Video reflects on how the lives and personal story of the people are a part of the story of the Universe. Some of the themes discussed are: sacred, human relationships to each other and to nature and teaching earth awareness to the young.

.3 CONNECTING INTEGRITY OF CREATION, JUSTICE, & PEACE- (A); 26:45 min.; UCC, 1991. Report of a United Church of Christ Conference on creation, justice, and peace. Shid Crease from the Periwinkle Project talks dramatically about saving the planet. Although the video-taping is amateur, the message is clear.

.4 WHAT IS THE INTEGRITY OF CREATION, JUSTICE, & PEACE- (A); 12 min.; UCC. Selections from a seminar discussing the interconnectedness of all creation and the need for humans to respect and care for all creation.

.5 EARTH SUMMIT 1992: Observations from Rio- (A); 27 min.; R.A.I.N., 1992. Comments from the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio in 1992.

.6 A CALL TO THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH By David Brower; (A); 30 min.; Guide; 1992. A discussion of what the Christian Church should do to help solve environmental problems on the earth.

.7 A SENSE OF PLACE: AN EXPLORATION GUIDE- (A); 28 min.; Guide; Baylands Productions, 1994. Funding for "A Sense of Place" has been provided by the Foundation for Global Community, a non-profit organization which is dedicated to discovering, living, and communicating the essential elements required to assure a sustainable living system. The program is narrated by Susan Sarandon.

VCI-804 LOVE THE EARTH AND BE HEALED- (A); 6 videos 24 - 30 min. ea.; Guide; EcuFilm, 1995.

This exciting series proposes that the earth is in trouble because people stopped loving it in order to use it. Each program has two parts: a story of what some people are doing to make a difference and interviews with people who think a lot about faith and ecology.

.1 FACING OUR DILEMMAS- (24 min.). An account of a major oil company's efforts to be environmentally responsible leads into reflections on the dilemmas we face and the way we face dilemmas.

.2 IN THIS WEB TOGETHER- (27 min.). The complex interconnections of all of life are explored in this look at an organic farm and grain company and in the reflections that follow on reconnecting both physically and spiritually.

.3 HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?- (27 min.). The practical story of the Rocky Mountain Institute's mission to work for the efficient use of resources as a path to global security. The people interviewed share thoughts on limits and the spiritual cost of consumerism.

.4 LOVING NATURE- (27 min.). A group of people from a congregation in Chester, Montana, is working to save the Sweetgrass Hills from modern gold mining techniques, in large part out of their love of the hills. Theologians and other thinkers reflect on the need to recover a love of nature that will result in a sense of kinship with the rest of creation.

.5 NOT IN ANYBODY'S BACKYARD- (25 min.). An account of a Wisconsin community's discovery of toxic waste contaminating the municipal water system is followed by reflections on environmental justice.

.6 CELEBRATING THE EARTH- (30 min.). A soliloquy on loving and caring for animals and some thoughts about what the church can do to lead into a visit to a "green" cathedral and a celebration of creation.

        Lawrence M. Principe, Professor of the History of Science and Technology and Professor of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University teaches this course which covers the historical sweep and philosophical flashpoints of the interactions between religion and science.  He unfolds a surprisingly cooperative dynamic of shared methods, ideas, and aspirations, and a tradition of disputational dialogue.

               The DVD is hosted by Francis S. Collins, who served for 15 years as Director of the Human Genome Project and  is a best-selling author.  He holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Yale University and is a physician as well as being one of the world’s leading geneticists.  More than a dozen American and British theologians and scientists consider how religion and science might coexist and even complement one another in the 21st century.
