VCY-500 LIFE PAC VIDEOS SERIES- (Y); Guides; PREM, 1989-1995.

Life Pac is a 6-year program for youth which includes a comprehensive set of resources for youth and their leaders. The programs may be ordered through the Celebrate curriculum of the Presbyterian and Reformed Educational Ministries (PREM). Only the videos will be available through the MRC.

.1 REACHING OUT, REACHING IN- (27 min.) Shows Presbyterian youth in action through the church as it responds to today's culture.

.2 JESUS CHRIST- 2 parts.

Part 1 THE WEEK-END- (29:30 min.) Video was produced with the hope of getting youth to discuss honestly and openly on film what faith means to them at this point in their lives. In a 36-hour "lock-in", 7 youths who did not know each other before state their honest feelings and opinions about Jesus Christ and faith.

Part 2 INSIDE THE WEEK-END: FLINGING OPEN THE DOORS- (18:54 min.) Video is intended for youth workers. It provides a reflective discussion among the four adults who were involved in making "The Week-end" and reveals how their experience in that process can help youth leaders with their own youth groups.

.3 ON LOCATION: IMAGES OF COMMUNITY- (16 min.) Video seeks to help viewers understand and explore community through a contemporary setting, a film crew on location. Can be used as a 1 to 1 1/2-hour study on community. Explores community in tradition, relationships, and vision.

.4 THERE ARE VARIETIES OF SERVICE- (14 min.) A documentary showing young people involved in a variety of service activities. The video describes how the youth determined their gifts, what they did, and why they did it. It helps motivate others to serve.

.5 THE GROWING EDGE- (20 min.) This documentary follows youth from three different churches as they participate in worship in one another's congregations and engage in a week-end retreat. The video examines their attitudes, questions, doubts, fears, hopes, and concerns about worship.

VCY-502 QUESTIONS OF FAITH FOR YOUTH (SERIES)- A (Y); Guide; EcuFilm, 1992.

The popular Questions of Faith format has been used for a series for high school and college students. The series features 20 articulate and thoughtful young people who talk about their beliefs and values. Scriptures are listed for each episode.

.1 WHAT'S GOD LIKE?- 20 min. Some questions discussed are: What's your idea of God? When do you feel closest to God? What's your idea of Jesus? What's most important about Jesus–his life and teachings or his death and resurrection?

.2 HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH DRUGS?- 17 min.

Questions: Are there drugs and alcohol in your school? How do you decide about using drugs or drinking? How does your faith help you? What if a friend pressures you?

.3 WHAT IS SIN?- 19 min. Questions: What's a sin? Where does evil come from? Do you believe we're born in sin?

.4 WHAT'S A FRIEND?- l7 min. Questions: How do you choose friends? How does a friend act? How do you relate to someone different?

.6 WHAT CAN THE CHURCH DO ABOUT THE FUTURE?- 20 min. Questions: What do you think the world will be like in 100 years? What can the church do about the earth's future? If you ran the church, how would you change it?

VCY-502 QUESTIONS OF FAITH FOR YOUTH II- (Y)  B about 20 min. ea.; Guides; EcuFilm, 1994.

The purpose of this series is to stimulate thoughtful discussion among youth. Nineteen high school and college students were interviewed on camera. Their comments were edited to make a montage of reflections on each topic.

.1 WHY PRAY?- What's the value of praying? Do you think God answers prayer? What do you pray for? What do you think God does when opposing sides pray to win?

.2 WHO DO YOU WANT TO BECOME?- What's your idea of a good person? Whom do you look up to? Is there any way you want to change? Does religion have anything to do with that?

.3 HOW MUCH STUFF DO YOU NEED?- Does money cause you problems? How important is having the right clothes? What's money good for? Does your faith have anything to say about money and things?

.4 HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT?- How do you make choices? If you saw your best friend cheating, would you tell? Is there increasing pressure on youth to break the law? What tempts you the most? Does your faith help?

.5 WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT VIOLENCE?- Is violence a problem in your school or neighborhood? Have you been the victim of violence or had violent urges? What can people your age do about it?

.6 IS LOVING YOURSELF EASY?- Do you have to be accepted by others to feel O.K. about yourself? Do you know youth who are depressed or suicidal? Can a person have too much self-esteem? Do you believe God loves you?

Each video is a lively entertaining show packed with humor and real-life stories of young people from coast to coast. It stimulates discussion on critical issues teenagers face.

.1 THE GREAT MATE RACE- (27 min.) Teenagers learn about different aspects of dating: (1) how to get started (2) how to handle rejection (3) how to know whether you are really in love.

.2 PERSUASIVE POWER- (26 min.) Teens learn how to handle various pressures: peer pressure, parent pressure, sexual pressure, media pressure and self-inflicted pressure. Shows how making the right choices protects your future.

.10 STRESSED FOR SUCCESS- (29 min.) Teens learn that overwhelming expectations cause stress even for Christians, but that there are successful ways to cope with stress.

.11 HOME IS WHERE THE HURT IS- (25 min.) In this episode young people learn how to cope with problems in the home like divorce and unemployment that are beyond their control.

.12 WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN?- (26 min.) This episode explores the questions; Why do bad things happen? Who's responsible? and Where was God? It brings a message of hope to troubled teens.

.13 GUATEMALA IS NOT A DIP- Fast Forward's T.V. crew tags along with missionaries Phil and Jana Disney as they fly into the remote mountain region known as the Ixil Triangle, travel by boat across mysterious Lake Attitlan, and climb ancient Mayan ruins in the jungles of Tikal. Find out why Phil and Jana would leave the comforts of the U.S. to live in Central America.

.14 THE REJECTION CONNECTION- This episode deals with rejection as it relates to friends, unrealistic expectations, and depression.

.15 LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!- This episode gives a surprising view of how teenagers feel about lying. It also demonstrates that friendships suffer severely when trust goes out of the relationship.

A video series of discussion starters for teenagers which includes "hot topics" on personal development, values, and social concern issues.

.1 ABORTION- Presents abortion issues, teenage pregnancy concerns, and the problems of pre-marital sex.

.2 AIDS/STD'S- Presents information on AIDS, STD's and pre-marital sex. Emphasizes that there are serious risks involved in pre-marital sex.

.3 PORNOGRAPHY- Teenagers express attitudes about pornography. Includes testimonies of former pornography addicts who point out the addictive nature of pornography.

.4 RACISM- Presents factors that contribute to racial conflicts at school. Teenagers of several races give opinions on the topic of racism. Shows how one student changed her prejudicial attitudes.

.5 INTEGRITY- Teenagers talk about integrity. Olympic track star, Madeline Manning, stresses the importance of integrity and the devastating effects of lying and cheating.

.6 HOMELESS- Workers in homeless shelters talk about the causes of homelessness and ways teens can help. Former homeless people are interviewed.

.7 STRESS- Discusses causes of stress among high school youth. Gives suggestions for coping with it.

.8 SELF-IMAGE- Shows the importance of a good self-image and the problems of low self-esteem. Gives suggestions of how to improve self-esteem.

.9 HOMOSEXUALITY- Shows the general lack of understanding about homosexuality. Testimonials are given by some people who have changed their sexual preference. Discusses some possible causes of homosexual behavior and some help that people have received through therapy and counseling. Mentions the Biblical point of view.

.10 DIVORCE- Teenagers of divorced parents discuss their feelings and reactions. Family counselors share some ways in which they have helped teenagers in broken family relationships.

DV & VCY-509 DOING THE RIGHT THING: VALUES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE- (J/JH); 5 videos, 9-10 min. ea.; Guide; Brown-Roa, 1994.

The videos in this series for young people contain real-life situations to help show how values can affect consequences. After the open-ended story is dramatized, the kids (viewers) discuss various options for resolving the situations.

.1 ROCK TICKET TROUBLE- (9 min.); Joey wants to go to a rock concert, but hasn't finished his science paper. His method of solving the problem has surprising consequences. The video covers the topics of stealing and telling the truth.

.2 STREET HOCKEY HASSLE- (10 min.); Several teenage boys refuse to let another boy, Wallace, join their game because they don't like the way he looks. Later, when they damage someone's property, they blame Wallace for it. The video addresses the topics of prejudice and lying.

.3 MATH CLASS MISCHIEF- (10 min.); Two classmates start rumors that Mallory, the class brain, is cheating on her math tests. When the math teacher hears the rumor, everything backfires. The video addresses the topics of jealousy and gossip.

.4 SWIM TEAM'S SPLASH- (9 min.); Julie, the new girl on the swim team, arouses jealousy in one of her teammates, who tries to turn the other girls against Julie. The video deals with cliques, peer pressure, and the Golden Rule.

.5 JAZZ BAND BLUES- (10 min.); Bob's practical joke that he thinks will impress Cindy backfires. The video addresses the topics of honesty and respect for the property of others.

DVY-509 DOING THE RIGHT THINGS: 7 STORIES FOR YOUNG TEENS- The DVD includes episodes 1 - 5 from the video series, Doing the Right Thing, plus 2 additional stories.

.6 BACK ALLEY BUDDIES- The goal of this episode is to help students realize that giving in to peer pressure means giving up their personal identity and power to determine their future.

In this series Ted and Lee, a comedy team, bring humor and new insight into familiar Bible stories.

.1 BRIDGE TO FORGIVENESS- (13 min.); This episode delves into the process of what it means to be forgiven and to forgive. Youth meet Jacob and Esau, Biblical brothers in need of forgiveness. Candid interviews with a variety of teens give connecting points for youthful viewers.

.2 BIG ENOUGH FOR YOUTH: GOD;S AMAZING ACCEPTANCE- (17 min.) Actors Ted and Lee bring to life the Apostle Paul, jailed and struggling with a letter he's writing to the Colossians. Paul gets a cellmate, an embezzler named Leon, who unwittingly helps Paul sharpen his letter to its true point: love binds everything together. Includes a music video featuring the "Lost and Found" band.

.3 DON'T SIT ON YOUR STUFF- 21 min.

Disciples Peter and Andrew (Ted and Lee) explore Jesus's parable of the master and his three servants and figure out that they shouldn't "sit on their stuff." They lead the youth to a discussion of what to do with their own "stuff"--time, money, and talents. The video also includes a song from "Tangled Blue" called "Gift of Grace" which gives a new interpretation of two stories of giving grace--the story of Mary's washing Jesus's feet and the story of the "Widow's Mite." The video tells a story of Tracy and how the choices she made had a direct effect on her future. Though growing up in a middle class home, she chose to use alcohol early, moved on to drugs and prostitution. She was arrested and convicted for knowingly passing along the AIDS virus. Eventually Tracy put her faith in Jesus Christ and her life changed. Because she was dying from HIV complications, the governor pardoned her and Tracy used her last months to talk to young people and make them aware that they are responsible for themselves.

Good Sex is a very different, very honest, very direct, very Biblical curriculum. It is a whole-person approach to sexual formation which includes body, mind, and spirit. The video is good for youth workers' training events and staff meetings.

Character, resiliency, and emotional intelligence are qualities essential for today’s young people to become responsible, caring, and successful adults. The LIFESTEPS series is the signal to build these critical traits. Each program features actual students filmed in actual schools and uses lively, spontaneous discussions, dramatized dilemmas, humor and the sensitive supportive guidance of Michael Pritchard. Each video is culturally sensitive and multi-ethnic.

.1 THE ABC'S OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE- By using his interviewing skills, Michael Pritchard meets the following objectives for this video: (1) to build a foundation for the development of social emotional learning (2) to develop the critical skill of identifying internal and external assets (3) to achieve balance by developing an appreciation of the emotional side of life, and the ability to set personal priorities (4) to develop positive values and character that will lead to good choices.
