        Randi Walker focuses on the development of themes that define the U.C.C.  Some of these themes are:  inclusiveness, diversity of theological heritage, congregational polity, liberal theological approach, and ecumenical spirit.

          ABB-6  WOMEN OF THE BIBLE:  A ONE-YEAR DEVOTIONAL STUDY OF WOMEN IN SCRIPTURE by Ann Spangler and Jean E. Syswerda (A); Zondervan, 2007.

  

         This updated book focuses on 52 remarkable women in Scripture—women whose struggles to live with faith and courage are not unlike our own.  The update includes a list of all the women in the Bible, a timeline of the women, a list of women in Jesus’ family tree, a list of women in Jesus’ life and ministry.

ABB-7   WHAT’S IN THE BIBLE AND HOW DO I USE IT? Real Help for Regular People (Y/A); Abingdon Press, 2008.

           

          This book is a great introduction on how to use your Bible.  Topics included are:  how to choose a Bible, how to study your Bible, famous people and places, and how to find biblical help on real-life issues such as hope, love, anger, forgiveness, and even body image.


ABB-8   WOMEN OF THE BIBLE with Paintings from the Great Art Museums of the World - by Carole Armstrong/ (Y/A); Simon and Schuster, 1998.

           

Women of the Bible presents seventeen stories of women of the Bible who have been celebrated for their courage and independence of spirit.  Each story is accompanied by a religious painting from a celebrated artist, including Medieval and Renaissance painters.

 

ABB-9   GOD’S TAPESTRY by W. Eugene March - (A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2009.

           

March helps the reader develop theological clarity about how to live in a religiously diverse society.  People need to reconsider how the Bible can help us as we approach the issues of diversity and pluralism.

ABB-10    MORE BAD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE by Barbara J. Essex - (Y/A); Pilgrim Press, 2009.
        This Bible study consists of twelve units and is designed for individual and/or group study.  Bad girls from the Hebrew Bible are Hagar, Shiphrah and Puah, Miriam, Zipporah, Bathsheba, Rizpah, and Huldah.  Bad girls from the New Testament are a crippled woman, the Syrophoenician woman, Martha and Mary, the Samaritan woman at the well, and Mary Magdalene.

ABC-1 INTRODUCING CHRISTIANITY by Michael Keene- (Y/A); Westminster John Knox Press, 1998.

The book is a clearly written introduction to Christianity for adults and young readers.

ABC-2 BEFORE THE THRONE OF GRACE: AN EVANGELICAL FAMILY IN THE EARLY REPUBLIC by Laura S. Seitz and Elaine D. Baxter- (A); Providence House Publishers, 1999.

Before the Throne of Grace brings United States history alive through the letters of James Richards and his family as they write about family life, work, and travel in New York after the Revolution. It helps the reader to understand the changes in American religious life at the end of the twentieth century.

ABC-3 JOHN CALVIN AND THE CHURCH: A PRISM OF REFORM- Timothy George, Editor; (A); West Minster John Knox Press, 1990.

Several contributors contribute to this inter-disciplinary work. Its five sections convey the range of interest among the contributors; Calvin and his times, theology, ecclesiology, interpretation of Holy Scripture, and worship and preaching.

ABC-4 A TEACHABLE SPIRIT: RECOVERING THE TEACHING OFFICE IN THE CHURCH - by Richard Osmer- (A); Westminster John Knox Press, 1990.

Osmer provides a strong understanding of the teaching office which is part of Reformation heritage. He discusses why the teaching office is important in mainline churches.

ABC-5 INTRODUCTIONS IN FEMINIST THEOLOGY SERIES- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2001.

The series explores various theological topics that challenge partriarchal theology and suggests liberating alternatives. The authors and editors provide reliable guides to the history of thinking, current issues and debaters as possible future development in feminist theology.

INTRODUCING AFRICAN WOMEN'S THEOLOGY by Mercy Amba Oduyoye- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2001.

The book attempts to probe the spirituality of African Christian women as they do their own thinking and speak their own words about God as well as other religious and cultural concerns.

B  INTRODUCING FEMINIST IMAGES OF GOD by Mary Grey- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2001.

The author considers recent thinking on the Divine, reflecting the work of women from diverse contexts. She addresses the use of restrictive God-language and opens the possibilities of more inclusive ways of praying. Drawing from various cultures, she presents God images that liberate.

C  INTRODUCING FEMINIST PASTORAL CARE AND COUNSELING by Nancy J. Gorsuch- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2001.

The book's claim is that a critically informed feminist perspective on ministry enhances the effectiveness and accuracy of pastoral responses to human need.

ABC-6  O GOD, TENDER AND JUST: REFLECTIONS AND RESPONSES AFTER SEPTEMBER 11, 2001- edited by Elizabeth C. Nordbeck; (A); United Church Press, 2002.

This is a book for and about the church which commemorates the violent acts of 9/11/01 and celebrates the faithful way in which the church responded to the crisis. Thousands of people logged on to the United Church website and their postings consistently showed their faith.

ABC-7  CAN THIS CHURCH LIVE?: A CONGREGATION, ITS NEIGHBORHOOD, AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION by Donald H. Matthews- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2004.

This book is the true story of a church that had an opportunity to thrive in the midst of a community that greatly changed its demographics. The church faced the harsh dilemma--Can a predominantly white church embrace and welcome the people of color in their community?

ABC-8    CONGREGATIONAL VITALITY is a growing series of resources providing local churches with engaging, insightful, and useful tools to revitalize and prepare themselves for ministry in the 21st century.  The authors in this series are United Church of Christ clergy whose churches demonstrate vitality.

A    LEADERSHIP FOR VITAL CONGREGATIONS by Anthony B. Robinson- (A); Pilgrim Press, 2006.
        This book is an essential leadership tool for clergy and lay leaders who wish to revitalize their leadership style and approach in order to become more effective leaders.

B    FAITH FORMATION IN VITAL CONGREGATIONS by Marian R. Plant, Pilgrim Press, 2009.
        Marian Plant is associate professor and Schauffler Chair of Christian Education at The Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio.  She writes this book for ordained and lay pastors and workers who want to have strategies for preparing the way forward in Adult Christian formation.

ABC-9A    KICKING HABITS:  WELCOME RELIEF FOR ADDICTED CHURCHES by Thomas G. Bandy- (A); Study guide; Abingdon Press, 1997.
        Tom Bandy helps “addicted” churches kick their habits with the deconstruction of the existing system, followed by emphasis on small group ministry, multi-track worship experiences, the retraining of enabling pastors, and an abiding, relentless sensitivity toward people who are seeking a Higher Power, but who have lost patience with conflicted, self-absorbed religious institutions.

ABC-9B    COMING CLEAN:  A STUDY GUIDE TO KICKING HABITS by Thomas G. Bandy- (A); Abingdon Press, 2001.
        Using a series of Bible studies, group discussions and group exercises, participants can customize and apply the insights into thriving church life to their own congregational context.

ABC-10    WAKING TO GOD’S DREAM:  SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP AND CHURCH RENEWAL by Dick Wills- (A); Abingdon Press, 1999.
        In this books, Wills shares the spiritual disciplines and insights that he believes account forf the transformation of the congregation he serves from a large church in decline to one that is growing and reaching out to its community in a variety of creative ministries.

ABC-11    ANNIE, THE KITCHEN QUEEN AND OTHER DISPATCHES FROM FORBEARANCE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH by Charlotte Johnstone, illustrated by Catherine Latson- (A) Presbyterian Women, Presbyterian Church, (USA), 2006.
        This book brings together the best of the best tales from Forbearance Presbyterian Church.  These gently amusing, always compassionate, portraits of one congregation ring true for all of us on faith’s journey together.

ABC-12  CHRISTIAN CHAOS:  REVOLUTIONIZING THE CONGREGATION by Thomas G. Bandy- (Y/A); Abingdon Press, 1999.
        Bandy argues that the organization of a congregation-its; boards and committees-constitutes a crucial ingredient in its vitality and mission.  Its organization will make all the difference in whether the church is a thriving system or a declining one.

ABC-13    LISTENING HEARTS:  DISCERNING CALL IN COMMUNITY by Suzanne Farnham, Joseph P. Gill, R. Taylor McLean, and Susan M. Ward- (A); Morehouse Publishing, 1991.

        Listening Hearts addresses the challenge of remaining faithful and attentive to God’s call and tells how a faith community can be a source of spiritual, psychological, physical, and financial support.  It is designated to be used in prayer and meditation and as a basis for group discussion.


ABC-14    TOKENS OF TRUST by Rowan Williams- (A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2007.
        Using the classic statements of the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams guides readers through the central elements of Christian faith.


ABC-15    SOUL SURVIVOR:  HOW MY FAITH SURVIVED THE CHURCH by Philip Yancey- (A); Doubleday, 1001 (Gift).

                   Yancey acknowledges that many spiritual seekers find few answers and little solace in the institutional church.  He tells the story of his own struggle to reclaim belief, interwoven with inspiring portraits of notable people from all walks of life, whom he calls his spiritual directors and mentors who transformed his life and work.


ABC-16     MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. FOR ARMCHAIR THEOLOGIANS by Rufus Burrow Jr., illustrated by Ron Hill- (Y/A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2009.

                  Burrow shows Martin Luther King Jr. to be a “serious theologian, an inspirational activist, and yet a man who did not escape the prejudices of his time.” (Michael Long)  This engaging storyteller narrates a “powerful, poignant, passionate account of the life” of Dr. King.

 

ABC-17     BEST ADVICE:  Wisdom on Ministry from 30 Leading Pastors and Preachers by William J. Carl III-  (A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2009.

            Carl gathers a diverse group of leading pastors and preachers and asks them, “What is your best advice to colleagues in ministry about preaching and being a pastor?  The responses are full of wisdom and practical advice, illuminating and helpful for all who are pastors and preachers.  This collection is a unique window into perspectives on ministry in the twenty-first century.  It provides inspiration, insight, and clarity.

 

ABC-18      THE WRITE STUFF: Crafting Sermons That Capture and Convince  by Sondra B. Willabee- (A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2009.

                  Sondra Willobee has served as Adjunct Professor of Preaching at Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio.  She shows how to capture and keep listeners’ attention, how to generate suspense through structure, and how to increase impact with vivid language.

 

ABC-19       PREACHING FROM MEMORY TO HOPE by Thomas G. Long- (A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2009.

                Renowned preacher Thomas G. Long identifies and addresses the most pressing challenges facing preaching today.  He confidently invites people “to lean forward in hope toward the promises of God.”

ABC-20       FAITHFUL DISAGREEMENT – WRESTLING WITH SCRIPTURE IN THE MIDST OF CHURCH CONFLICT -   
(A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2009.

          

Conflict is all too common in the church today, but conflict over Biblical interpretation has been with the church since its earliest days.  The author reflects on early conflicts, drawing lessons from each about how it relates to current conflicts.

ABD-1 CREATING INTERFAITH COMMUNITY by R. Marston Speight; Study Guide by Glory and Jacob Dharmaraj-(A); GBGM-UMC, 2003.

The essential elements needed to create an interfaith community are that: (1) the participants act and relate to one another because of their faith and (2) they retain their own religious beliefs. Some of the different religions are described in the book and reasons are given for creating interfaith community. The book also includes suggestions and resources.

ABD-2 THE GLOBAL SPIRIT LIBRARY series-(A); The Pilgrim Press, 2000.

The Global Spirit Library is the first comprehensive collection of the spiritual literature of the whole world,. presented in accessible form It is aimed at people who belong to a particular religious community and wish to broaden their spiritual outlook and to others who seek spiritual wisdom.

A 366 READINGS FROM JUDAISM edited by Robert Van De Weyer- Included in the readings are: 1. the life and history of the ancient Hebrew tribes 2. the visions and ideals of the ancient Hebrew prophets 3. the wit and wisdom of the Jewish rabbis 4. the insights of the Jewish philosophers and mystics.

B 366 READINGS FROM TAOISM AND CONFUCIANISM- edited by Robert Van De Weyer.

Included in the readings are: 1. the profound and enigmatic sayings of Lao Tzu 2. the wit and irony of Chuang Tzu 3. the spiritual adventures of Lieh Tzu and Yang Chu and 4. the gentle wisdom of Confucius and Mencius.

ABD-3 NOT WITH MY NEIGHBOR: ISSUES ON INTERFAITH RELATIONS by S. Wesley Ariarajiah (A); Risk Book Series, 1999.

This book offers a clear and challenging introduction to key issues that arise when Christians and churches enter into conversation with their neighbors of other faiths.

ABD-4 GOD IS ONE: THE WAY OF ISLAM - Second Edition by R. Marston Speight- (A); Friendship Press, 2001.

The book presents who Muslims are, what they believe and how their faith not only unites them, but shapes every aspect of their lives. It was first written by a committed Christian who spent years living with Muslims.

ABD-5 TEVYE'S GRANDCHILDREN: REDISCOVERING A JEWISH IDENTITY by Eleanor Mallet- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2004.

Eleanor Mallet describes the unusual steps she took to understand her Jewish past. She explores the dynamic and relatively recent field of Jewish history, studied Hebrew, and traveled to Israel and Germany.

ABD-6    WHAT DO OUR NEIGHBORS BELIEVE?:  QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY, AND ISLAM by Howard R. Greenstein, Kendra G. Hotz, and John Kaltner- (A); Presbyterian Women, Presbyterian Church (USA), 2006.
        This book paints a historical and theological portrait of each of the world’s Abrahamic traditions from its beginning to the present day.  It lends itself well to both group and individual study and serves as an important and practical guide to comparative religion.

ABE-1 LET JUSTICE ROLL DOWN: A WORSHIP RESOURCE FOR LENT, HOLY WEEK, AND EASTER compiled by Geoffrey Duncan- (Y/A); The Pilgrim Press, 2003.

The book is a collection of new prayers, readings, and liturgies that takes us from Shrove Tuesday to Easter. The writers come from many countries and backgrounds, yet they share a spirituality and a longing for justice

ABE-2 WERE YOU THERE? FINDING OURSELVES AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS by Erik Kolbell- (A); Westminster John Knox, 2005.

Kolbell explores how each person or group at the foot of the cross responded differently to Jesus's predicament, and shows how their different responses represent the great range of human responses also available to us.

ABE-3 ALIVE TO GOD IN CHRIST (I Believe Series) by Joseph D. Small IV- (A); Witherspoon Press, PCUSA, 2008.


This Lenten Bible study not only presents an accessible way to nurture our intellectual and spiritual understanding of Jesus, but it also challenges the participant to explore ways that faith is lived out in people’s lives and in the world.  Dr. Small brings to life the depth and breadth of Reformed understanding of Jesus, while touching upon deep social and personal places where God’s healing and life-giving presence  are  yearned for.

A fascinating and provocative six-session study that helps both new and seasoned fathers have a better relationship with their daughters.

ABF-2 GIVING GOD'S GOOD GIFTS: THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY OF PARENTHOOD by George E. Conway-(A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2001.

Conway uses scriptural insights and personal anecdotes to identify seven gifts that parents can give to their children to help them form healthy spiritual identities.

ABF-3 PILGRIM PRAYERS FOR SINGLE FATHERS by David Albert Farmer-(A); The Pilgrim Press, 2004.

This book is a collection of conversations with God based on heart-felt, real-life situations. Each entry begins with a letter addressing a specific issue and continues with scripture passage and prayer, concluding with an interesting passage.

ABF-4    GRACED VULNERABILITY:  A THEOLOGY OF CHILDHOOD by David H. Jensen- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2005.
        Jensen suggests that childhood provides a window for understanding the shapes of graced human life and the violence that inhabits life.  By offering a fresh understanding of the vulnerable child in the image of God, Jensen presents a compelling reinterpretation of sin, church practice, and Christian witness in which there are many threats to children’s lives.

ABF-5    THUS FAR ON THE WAY:  TOWARD A THEOLOGY OF CHILD ADVOCACY by Eileen W. Lindner- (A); Witherspoon Press, 2006.   
        In 1995 the first Institute for Child Advocacy Ministry was established at former Alex Haley farm, the home of the Children’s Defense Fund.  With warmth, pastoral sense, and humor, Eileen Lindner unpacks profound ideas, delves into Bible stories, and connects what it means today to follow God’s call to do justice for all the world’s children.

ABF-6    I DON’T WANT TO GO TO CHURCH!:  PRACTICAL WAYS TO DEAL WITH KIDS AND RELIGION by Scott Cooper- (A); Paulist Press, 2007.  This is a practical and appealing guide to help parents provide religious and moral guidance for their children.

ABF-7    FIRST COMES LOVE/  THE EVER-CHANGING FACE OF MARRIAGE by John C. Morris-(A); The Pilgrim Press, 2007.
        In an entertaining but factual manner, the author has created an adult study resourcde that shows the evolution of what we consider to be “traditional” marriage.  Morris explores twenty-one different reasons for marriage as well as varieties of marriage in our Biblical, European, North American heritage.

ABF-8    MAKING A HOME FOR FAITH – NURTURING THE SPIRITUAL LIFE OF YOUR CHILDREN by Elizabeth F. Caldwell- (A); Pilgrim Press, 2007.
          This book, an update of a classic 2000 resource, shows families how to articulate their faith.  The book places special emphasis on the issues of living in a pluralistic culture.

ABG-1 WHEN YOUR PARENT DIES (Hope and Healing series) by Ron Klug- (A); Augsburg, 2001.

A comforting and helpful book for adults grieving the loss of a parent.

ABG-2 HOME IS WHERE I LIVE by Camilla Warrick- (A); Bridge Resources, 2000.

This book was undertaken after the author was diagnosed with breast cancer. It is about the authentic journey and the healing discovery of one's special relationship to God and the universe.

ABG-3 INTERRUPTED BY GOD: GLIMPSES FROM THE EDGE by Tracey Lind- (A); Tracey Lind shares her brave and exhilarating spiritual journey here in reflections, photographs, and fresh ideas about Christianity in our time. She engages in deep conversations about the meaning of faith.

ABG-4 WIPE THE TEARS: 30 CHILDREN'S SERMONS ON DEATH by Kenneth and Phyllis Vos Wezeman, Anna L. Liechty-(A); Designed for use by clergy and lay leaders to preach to children from kindergarten through upper elementary age, the book presents 30 sermons on death through the use of Scripture. Sermon topics include: Abraham's Death: Farewell to a Father, Easter Promise: Eternal Life, All Saints' Day: A Cloud of Witnesses, and Faithful Hands: A Grandparent's Death.

ABG-5 WHEN YOUR CHILD DIES (Hope and Healing series) by Theresa M. Huntley-(A); Augsburg, 2001.

Author and grief counselor Theresa Huntley offers grieving parents honest, practical guidance. Her insights into the grief process, the tasks of mourning, and the ways people grieve will help parents come to understand, accept, and live with their loss.

ABG-6 WHEN YOUR CHILD LOSES A LOVED ONE (Hope and Healing Series)- (A) Augsburg Fortress, 2001.

Author and grief counselor Theresa Huntley presents the guidance parents need to help their children grieve.

ABG-7 DIFFERENCE AND IDENTITY: A THEOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY by Ian A. McFarland- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2001.

McFarland challenges the view that persons are defined by characteristics that they hold in common, since such definitions exclude the marginalized. Using the doctrine of the Trinity as the basis for an alternative account of personhood, McFarland argues that God claims us as persons in our difference from one another and not by virtue of an underlying sameness.

ABG-8    HEALING DEATH by Dennis L. Zimmerman- (A); The Pilgrim Press, 2007.
        The author lays out the emotional and hands-on issues of death and dying and offers concrete ways to deal with each one.

ABG-9    CARING FOR OURSELVES WHILE CARING FOR OUR ELDERS by Maren Tirabassi, Maria Tirabassi and
        Leanne McCall Tigert; (A);  The Pilgrim Press, 2007.
        This book shares true stories of family members who are caring for elderly loved ones.  The stories are accompanied by a short psychological commentary on each situation, some Biblical background for the text, and questions for discussion and reflection.

ABG-10      THE WILL OF GOD by James Howell- (A); Westminster John Knox Press, 2009.

                    Veteran pastor and theologian James C. Howell considers a number of issues related to God’s will—how it is known, how it is done, and how we respond when bad things happen and we feel God is absent or has turned away from us.

ABW-45    A HUNGER FOR HEALING:  THE TWELVE STEPS AS A CLASSIC MODEL FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

        Miller relates each of the Twelve Steps to Biblical teaching as he tells of his personal journey of healing.  He suggests that the presence of spiritual and emotional pain, anxiety, and confusion in one’s life may be indicative of the same spiritual disease found at the heart of alcoholism and other addictions.  For many, the Twelve Steps have become the spiritual disciplines for a new decade as Christians turn toward God and start a pilgrimage toward wholeness.  (See VCW-807.)
