Summer 2009 - Heroes of the Christian Church

For Older Children

The latest addition to The Torchlighter Series is The Richard Wurmbrand Story (DVC-310.6).  In war-torn Romania, there is only one way for churches to get the protection of the government:  give their support and allegiance to the Communists, who are in control.  Pastor Richard Wurmbrand chooses to speak up for Christ, thereby placing his own life and the lives of his family in great danger.  When Richard’s choice lands him in a Communist prison, his faith and wisdom are tested to the limits.  His story continues to impact the world today.

For Youth/Adults

The 500th birthday of John Calvin inspired the publication of John Calvin:  His Life and Legacy (DVC-552).  World-renowned scholars and Reformed church leaders tell the story of the 16th century pastor.  Using stunning photography and clear insightful scholarship and analysis, this project dispels the myths of, and sets the context and conditions for, Calvin’s effect on the church and the whole course of Western civilization.

Billy Graham (DVC-551) tells the story of Billy Graham, who has converted masses of people.  This DVD is a profile of the renowned preacher, focusing on the pivotal events in Graham’s life, including William Randolph Hearst’s decision to publicize Graham’s crusades, his close ties with several presidents, and his refusal to speak out against the Vietnam War or participate in Civil Rights demonstrations. Interviews with friends, family, and famous people further illuminate Graham’s life and trace his development from childhood to the peak of his spiritual career.

For Youth and Adults

The Fourth Wiseman (VCE-503), based on Henry Van Dyke’s classic story, is a fictional story set in Biblical times.  It tells the story of a fourth Magi, Artaban, who goes on a journey to take three precious gifts to the Messiah.  On the way, Artaban uses his gifts to help people in dire need.  He finally encounters Jesus on Easter Sunday.

Fall 2008

Fall is in the air.  That means your church Sunday School has gotten going for the autumn session.  Hats off to all of you who are heading up the new programs and/or teaching in one of the many slots that have been filled.  You’ll want to make your programs as engaging as possible, and the Media Resource Center can help you with curriculum choices and lots of program options to enhance your choices.  We do have samples of the new curriculum “Rock Solid”, as well as “Gather Round,”  “We Believe,” and “Live Big.”

Many thanks to those of you who filled out the survey sent to you earlier this spring.  We received a number of thoughtful ideas and recently had a meeting to discuss some of them.  Several groups have been set up to address some changes.

The staff here plans to spend time this fall doing some culling of our resources, removing videos that are out of date.  The changes will be reflected in next year’s catalog.   Speaking of the catalog, Pat has been working hard on this year’s edition and it is nearing completion.  We’ll be sending out CDs this fall, but the newest material is already on the website.

Some of you have asked about using the “fishing license” for Bluefish resources.     Bluefish has hundreds of downloadable illustrations on video covering 80 different topics  usable for youth and adult small groups.  The Media Resource Center has purchased a “fishing license” and you, as members of the MRC, can have access to 25 free video downloads.  To get to the material, you need to phone us at 408-378-2532, or e-mail us at emrcvideos@aol.com.  We will give you the code to use at the checkout screen, instead of paying.
