Our Mission Statement- "Moving
people toward a better future with Christ; Loving, Listening, Sharing,
Serving"
Emmaus has the distinction of being the oldest
congregation and church building in the Township of Galloway.
The class (congregation) at Smithville was founded
in 1790 as part of the Salem Circuit. The church started with about
12 members. Richard Leeds was the first local preacher and continued
in that capacity for approximately 66 years. The church fluctuated through
the 1800's until 1869 when a new church was built. In the early 1900's
the congregation size was between 80 and 120 people. In 1931 there were
65 church members and 80 Sunday School members. (These are estimates
- church records were stolen some years ago). During the 1950's through
the 70's the church was in a downward trend and did not start building
up again until the 1980's to the present day. Our church has a varied
and impressive past and more can be learned from "Emmaus United
Methodist Church of Smithville. - A written History", compiled
by Anna S. Higbee, and available from our library.
The Lord has continued to keep our church alive as a beacon of his presence
to the community and with that beacon people have come to know the Lord
Jesus Christ. As we travel into the 21st century with our planned addition,
we will be able to keep His beacon shining throughout our congregation
and community.
