HISTORY OF ELM SPRINGS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The Elm Springs United Methodist Church was built in 1893 on land given by Mr. Alex Skelton. The sanctuary was built  by Mr. Bill Farbush and dedicated by Rev. Sam Ketron. The original cemetery ground was donated by Mr. Bill Sensabaugh.  Mr. Maynard Armstrong donated additional land in 1954. The church took its name from an elm tree beside the Evan's Spring. Before the church was completed, Sunday School was held in the Wallace School House. The original structure continues to serve the present congregation with changes and additions being made.  The women of Elm Springs organized in 1953 with eight active members. The men of Elm Springs organized and received their charter in 1980.
Elm Springs and Amis Chapel Churches joined to form a two point circuit in June, 1975.

In 1984 the Churches purchased three lots from Calvin Blair for the sum of $6000, for the purpose of building a parsonage. The property lies 1.6 miles from each church on Carters Valley Road.  Ground was broken on Mar. 24, 1984.  The parsonage was built by Bob and Ken Wood and was dedicated in September 1986 by Bishop Kern Eutsler and D.S. Ray Robinson.  Rev. Grant Rowell and family were the first to occupy it.

In 1969 the lot below the church was bought. The fellowship hall was constructed there in 1986, and has been a great asset to the church. We gave the church a new facelift in 1990 by installing vinyl siding on the outside, and replacing the old windows with new ones bought by friends and members in memory of their beloved ones.  Adjoining property was purchased from the Goins family on April 27, 2004.  This area was converted to the park and picnic area.
