Oakwood Terrace Task Force
The EMUMC is teamed up with First

The Task Force helps the resident

The Task Force helped pay for summer school for
fourteen children at Shoals Elementary.
During the school year we sponsor after school
homework help and hope to have it two times a week this
coming school year.
Nine children went to summer camp due to the
contributions and energies of the Task Force members.
Residents of all ages at Oakwood Terrace
Apartments now have access to a new computer-based
learning center, thanks to a recent
grant from Verizon Foundation. Oakwood Terrace, a not-for-profit
unit of Kanawha Valley Homes, provides housing for low-income
families in the Charleston area. Verizon Foundation
awarded the $7,800 grant to support learning, GED test
preparation and job skills training programs at the
apartment complex. "Helping people experience the
full power and joy of learning is important to Verizon,"
said Gale Given, president of Verizon West Virginia.
"This new computer center is an educational resource
for those who otherwise wouldn't have access to computer
technology." The computers have Internet access and
will be under the constant supervision of adult
volunteers. Bruce Hogan, Director of Kanawha Valley
Homes, and Linda Lester, Manager of the Oakwood Terrace
Apartments, have provided space for the computer center.
The center opened in November. It is operated with
volunteers from the Oakwood Terrace Task Force, a group
associated with local Presbyterian and Methodist
churches, including Elizabeth Memorial, that has provided
educational and recreational activities for the children
of Oakwood Terrace Apartments since 1994.

Many Elizabeth Memorial members volunteer their time at
Oakwood Terrace.
Elizabeth Memorial always has volunteers who drive
for Task Force sponsored events such as outings to local
pools and recreational facilities, as well as helping
with the after school tutoring program.
Volunteers are always needed and
welcome :
- To help organize recreational
activities
- To help carry out these activties
- To provide transportation
- To engage in reading and tutoring
activities - -Homework help needs
volunteers on Tues from 3:30-5PM, and possibly another
day during the week.
- To foster a sustained "Read
Aloud" program - -Read A
Loud needs additional volunteers so that we can continue
with the schedule of having two people read to the
children once a month on Thursday nights from 7-8PM.
Training is available.
- To help supervise the new computer
laboratory - -The computer lab
needs volunteers An introductory schedule for this
activity has been set at 7:00 - 8:30pm on Monday,
Tuesday, and 4:30 - 6:00pm on Thursday, but will likely
be revised according to the schedule of the volunteers
available
Volunteering is a rewarding activity. Ask
anyone that is involved.
Check with the church office at 342-7351,
or Barb or Jim Smith at 342-1755 or information on how to get
involved.
