The First United Methodist Church, the first
church built in Elgin, has served the people of Elgin
for 126 years under several names including: the
Elgin Methodist Episcopal Church South, the
Elgin Methodist Church, and the First United
Methodist Church.
1840: Mary
(Buchanan)Christian Burleson began church.
1874: Church Services
began in school building across the street
from what is now the Rainbow House.
1882: First one-room
church built on present site.
1906: Sanctuary with
new organ and stained glass window dedicated.
1922: Education annex
added.
1949: Sunday school
buiding from Camp Swift added.
Now houses our Scouting Program.
1962: Swedish Manda
Church merged with Methodis Church.
1967: Manda church
bell (circa 1892) acquired.
1973: April
Fool’s Day fire gutted sanctuary and annex, destroying the pipe
organ.
The First Baptish Church enabled us to contiue
services, funerals,
and meetings.
1994: Refurbished
sanctuary dedicated.
1998: New parsonage
purchased off-campus.
1999: Original
parsonage renovated to include the pastor’s study,
church offices, and conference room. New
Fellowship Hall,
education wing, and nursery opened.
2003: Hospitality Team
Pays off note for kitchen appliances.
New PlayScape for the children.
