Prayer Shawl Ministries

Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Plato Center

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Plato Center, IL began in January 2005. Parish nurse, Jackie Johnson found a write-up on the Internet and brought it to a committee meeting.

From this meeting a group of knitters and learners formed a group called the “Knitty Gritters”, meeting between services on the second Sunday of each month. There were several youth who also learned to knit. This gift of knitting even spread to Bernice Anderson teaching a homeless gathering in the Elgin Public Library.

Each shawl has a hand written prayer card attached to it and no record of the recipient is made. Periodically a prayer of dedication is given during the morning worship service. The shawls are hung on display in the church and available to anyone to give or receive. A prayer is that this ministry will continue to provide support to those needing comfort.
