FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO: Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 4:00 pm, the East Greenwich Clergy and our Missions Ministry are sponsoring a film and discussion of how people of faith relate to issues of homosexuality. Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone wrestling with the issues of Scripture and sexual orientation.

WOMEN'S FELLOWSHIP LUNCHEON: All of our church women are invited to join us at 11:30 am on Saturday, November 21, at the Eleven Forty Nine restaurant, 1149 Division St. in Warwick. We get together for lunch every other month at a local restaurant, order off the menu, and enjoy the opportunity to meet new people and visit with old friends. If you plan to attend or would like more information, please contact: Cynthia leonhardt (739-6162 or leonhardtc@cox.net) or Virginia Caldwell (884-3244).
EGUMC PRESENTS "A LIVING NATIVITY:" We are planning a special event to offer the church and the community this Advent season. Imagine walking through Bethlehem the night Jesus was born, interacting with Mary and Joseph, shepherds and sheep, the Magi and more. The story is told through narration while actors (members of the congregation) act it out. Walk through the EGUMC Living Nativity on Saturday, December 12, from 5:00-7:00 pm. Then come in to the Sanctuary to share your favorite Christmas musical pieces and have some delicious cider and cocoa in our Fellowship Hall. If you are interested in being part of this Christmas gift to the church and the community as an actor, singer, set coordinator, refreshment planner, etc., or for more information, please call or e-mail Carol Reale at 884-4221 or egumcce@aol.com.
WOMEN'S
READING PROGRAM: The
purpose of the Reading Program is to encourage women of the church:
to expand understanding of and participation in God’s mission; to
increase sensitivity to all human beings — their needs, interests and
concerns; to encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today;
to grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in
contemporary life; to enhance self-knowledge and to act from that
knowledge; and to strengthen involvement in local and global Christian
mission. Book selections are taken from the United Methodist Women's
Division Reading Program catalog. The Reading Program 2010 catalog is
available on-line at
http://www.missionresourcecenter.org/wdstore/resources/publications/READING_PROGRAM_CATALOG_2010.pdf.
Our next selection for reading is "THEY TAKE OUR JOBS!" by Aviva
Chomsky. This groundbreaking work dismantles 21 of the most widespread
myths and beliefs about immigrants and immigration. "They Take Our Jobs!"
challenges the underlying assumptions that fuel these misinformed claims
about immigrants, radically altering our notions of citizenship,
discrimination, and U.S. History. The discussion on this book will take
place on January 16, 3 - 5 PM. Two copies of the book are
available for borrowing from the church library. Contact Linda
Bergemann, 322-9946 or LBergemann@aol.com, for more information
or suggestions for future reading.
BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS! How about learning the basics of the Fox Trot, the Waltz, the Rumba and some swing, all in an environment that is comfortable, relaxed and fun? Our favorite instructor is Tracy Rose and she boasts that there is no one that she can not teach to dance. Come alone or as a couple. The price is $30 a person and includes 3 lessons held at the church on January 8, 15 and 22 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Dress comfortably. These classes are appropriate for you if you have never taken a class, as well as if you have participated in some or any classes. Tracy says she can keep us all interested and learning and we often rotate partners so we will be learning the proper way to dance with the men leading and the women following. (The men love this, as they’re in charge!) Tracy usually brings more advanced students with her to help her teach and help balance the class. Please mark your calendars and a sign up sheet will be in the Narthex on the round table probably by late November or you can e-mail Susan Battista – battistabs@cox.net. Please join us!
