New to the Church?

Welcome to East Greenwich United Methodist Church!

We believe that every journey is sacred because it has brought you to this place and this time. Regardless of why you have come, you are welcome.

You may be joining us from another United Methodist Church or you may be from a different denomination.

Talking to people in EGUMC you will hear a variety of faith stories.  In the EGUMC congregation there are people who have been Methodists their whole life as well as those who have been Baptists, Catholics, Presbyterians or come from other non-denominational churches.  Sometimes people join our church because their spouse has a faith preference in the United Methodist Church.  Sometimes people join us because they feel we are a better fit for them in their spiritual journey than places they have been before. You do not need to be a member of our church (or any church) to share in worship with us or participate in the sacraments of communion or baptism.  You are always welcome to join any of our adult bible studies or register your children for Sunday school or youth activities.

You may be joining us after a long “break” from church or this may be the first time you have attended a church.

Sometimes churches can be uncomfortable places.  Often newcomers aren’t sure what to say or what to do.  There is nothing complicated about our worship service.
A typical service looks like this:
  Opening Hymn
  Greeting
  Sharing of concerns and celebrations
  Prayer
  Hymn or choir singing
  Scripture reading for the week
  10:00 service has a Children’s Moment (Pre-K through 5)
Sunday school aged children (Pre-K through 12) go to class
  Hymn or choir singing
  Sermon
  Offertory
  Blessing
  Hymn
Worship ends and coffee fellowship begins

Everything you need to know is in the bulletin handed out by our ushers or projected on the screen at the front of the sanctuary.  Communion is offered on the first Sunday of every month.

You may want to be part of a community to discuss issues of faith.

You do not need to take any classes or profess a litany of beliefs as a prerequisite of membership.  Ultimately we ask those who join us as members, “Do you want to become a follower of Jesus Christ?”  When people followed the Jesus of history, they may not have known who he was or where he was going.  They felt the urge to follow.  As they followed they asked, struggled, doubted, and learned. As you become involved in the church we would invite you to join in on an adult Bible study.  In matters of faith Methodists use the "Wesleyan quadrilateral" to balance the Bible, Reason, Tradition, and Experience.

You may feel that the chaos of life is too much to deal with and you need a place to center yourself of the essentials of life.

We ask people who become members to support the church with “your prayers, your presence, your gifts and your service." We have a variety of ministries to help you become centered serving the church and community.

You may have experienced a deep pain in your life and you are looking for a place where you can feel accepted and cared for.

We believe God loves and accepts you as you are.  In acknowledging this  unconditional grace, we act out that love towards each other and the world around us.

You may not know why you are here.

Sometimes the path of faith is a mystery.  We’re glad you came.
