Our mission, vision and values
are more than just statements; at Edom United Methodist Church, they
serve as our rule of corporate life. Each ministry of our church
is designed to fulfill our mission, support our vision and hold true to
our values.
Our Values:
Missional - we will seek
to always be looking outward rather than inward. We will seek out
our neighbors, the sojourners, the stranger, the needy, and the
marginalized so that we may remove barriers and open doors for ministry,
evangelism and discipleship.
Relational - we will
always seek to be deeply connected in ways that unites and builds one
another up in love, respect and encouragement. Authentic love will
be the gauge that we use to measure all of our relationships.
Incarnational - we will
always seek to have Christ incarnate in all that we do, from greeting to
feeding the homeless and from mission work to teaching. We will
ask ourselves how Jesus is shining through us with every step of the
journey.
Excellence - Colossians
3:23 reminds us that excellence is giving God our very best. We
will seek to always do the very best with the resources that we have
been provided. We will measure this value by asking if what we are
working on is truly ready and if God would be honored by our efforts.
Creativity - we will
always seek to do ministry in creative ways by discovering new and
innovative ways to express the character and nature of God and the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. Simply put, we will minister with open
minds.
Intentionality - This
speaks to the way in which we will always seek to think through what we
are trying to accomplish and seek to have a clear vision and purpose for
each thing that we do, before we do it. We will practice
discernment and wait in the Holy Spirit. If this reveals that our
thinking somehow doesn't line up with our mission, vision or other core
values, then we don't do it!
Well Ordered Hearts and Lives -
this is how we will live. This value asks each of us who
we are when no one is looking. We value not just what happens on
Sunday mornings, but the consistent, day-to-day nurturing of our
relationship with Christ. We expect that this will be messy at
times, but in the process we also expect that we are going on to
perfection--becoming more loving, more giving, and more joyful.
Through well ordered hearts and lives, we expect that our hearts will be
more open.
Process and Assessment -
We will value the journey that we are on together by embracing it as a
process rather than an event. This will mean an active
participation with and waiting upon God. Assessment is the gauge
by which we will evaluate our journey. Our ministries will be
evaluated in light of our mission, vision and value statements. We
will ask ourselves what God is using and what God is not using; what is
working and what is not working as it relates to the fulfillment of
these statements.
Leadership - Reflecting
upon Romans 12:8, we believe that consistent, effective and loving
leadership is essential to realizing our mission and vision.
Equipping and empowering others to do both the mission (God's work in
the world) and the ministry (God's work in the church) they are called
to will be the foundation of our leadership.
God Moments - will be
honored. Our aim is to always use all of the resources at our
disposal to point others and ourselves toward God. We will ask
ourselves if God showed up in a service or ministry area, and if so,
what elements or environment lead to this. We will not seek to
manipulate the spiritual, but rather we will seek to recognize and
celebrate the moments of God whereby the ordinary is made extraordinary.
