Edom United Methodist Church
It is hard to believe that it is May already! This is a busy time for a lot of
people. Some of us are planning our
family vacations. Teachers and students
are both looking forward to the end of the school year. Seniors are looking forward to
graduation. Some members are even
getting ready to go to Annual Conference.
With all that is
going on, I wanted to take this opportunity to give you a few highlights of
what is coming up in the next month or so.
First, beginning on May 18th we will put the choir’s and
preacher’s robes away for the summer and invite everyone to come as they are.
Second, as we move into a more relaxed feel for our summer services, we are
going to explore what it means to be the church by looking at the way that the
early church developed as I present a sermon series out of the book of
Acts. In addition to this sermon series
beginning on Pentecost Sunday and the stowing away of our robes, we will celebrate
Mothers in our community.
The youth group
will be busy this May as well.
Beginning in May, we will begin our work together preparing supplies to
be shipped and then distributed in the Line Islands later this summer. We have committed to help two schools with
Bibles and school supplies that are necessary for continuing education in the
high schools. Additionally, on May 30th
and 31st we will be having another garage sale! We have already accumulated several truck
and trailer loads of furniture, knick knacks, and other assorted goodies to
sell over that weekend. If you have
something that you would like to donate or would be able to contribute your
time that weekend to work with us, please contact Russell at the church.
If you were in
service last weekend, then you were probably surprised by a challenge that I
placed before the congregation. For
those of you not in service, I want to let you in on the challenge. I have challenged the congregation to have
100 people in worship at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday June 8th! Typically, on normal Sundays, our attendance
hovers between 45 and 55 people. That
means if everyone invites and brings one person with them on the 8th
of June, we will have no problem meeting this goal. As an incentive, I have asked Kerri Crocker to join us that
morning and lead us in worship. Kerri
is a gifted singer and songwriter who will be a guest at Annual Conference this
year; and she has agreed to join us in Edom for worship on June 8th. If ever there was a great time to invite a
friend, family member, or neighbor to our church, this is it! This will take everyone’s effort to
accomplish, but I am confident that with God’s help, the goal is well within
reach!
Finally, the day
before Kerri arrives we will be celebrating community as we gather at Edom’s
Community Center for a Fun Day in the Park.
We will have food, games, a slip and slide, a bounce house, and live
music provided by Teen Mania’s School of Worship. Please tell all of your friends about this great weekend!
With school
drawing to a close and the summer getting ready to begin, I could not be more
excited about what the Spirit is doing in our midst and all of the great
horizons that we have to cross in the months to come!
In Christ’s Service,
Russell Hall
