Abram: A Man Who Walked With God

Genesis 17:1 - 2 Rev. Joseph Harris March 26, 2006

There is a story of an elderly couple who went to the doctor for a check up. They received a good report and were told to come back in six months. "Write that down." said the wife. "You'll forget if you don't." Later that evening the husband was going for a snack. "Do you want anything?" he asked. "Ice cream with berries and whipped cream on top. Write it down." The husband said he could remember that. Later he returned with a stack of pancakes and sausages. "I knew you'd forget. You didn't bring the syrup I asked for." said the wife.

Sometimes we forget what we are doing. When we walk with God, we don't forget, for walking with God means we are pleasing God. Abram walked with God; so did Enoch. And one day when Enoch was walking with God, he walked home with God. A man had his portrait painted, but the hair didn't look right. A friend asked him about it. "When we were first going together, my wife thought my ears stuck out too much, so I let my hair grow to cover them." The friend remarked that the couple had been married more than 30 years; "But the romance hasn't gone out of it." said the man. The romance didn't go out of the walk Abram had with God.

We are called to walk with God and the romance doesn't go out of it as long as we remember we are called to please God. There are those who will say that God is supposed to please us, but that isn't it. God wants to bless us, to give us good things, but first he wants to grow a relationship with us. A good relationship does not grow up all at once.

We have to practice being in the presence of God. Abram lacked moral courage and did not always do the right thing, but he walked with God and Abram obeyed God. That is another part of a good relationship; you want to please the other person. Satan held a convention and he and his workers talked about how they could keep Christians from having a relationship with God. Get them to spend so much they'll have to borrow and then they'll have to work extra to pay the bills. Give them things like casinos and lotteries and other things so they'll thing they can get something for nothing. But most of all, don't let them fellowship with other Christians. Keep them BUSY! Being Under Satan's Yoke.

The best way to grow a relationship with God is to get to know him.. You have to read the Bible to get to know him, and you need to study in your Bible, and you need the fellowship of other Christians, and you need to work at it. Isn't it time you rededicated yourself to a relationship with God.
