The History of Ebenezer UMC

The church originally known as The Class, met some time prior to 1840. In 1840 it came to be known as the Ebenezer Class, and met in the home of Thomas Manwarring, which was located approximately one mile southwest of the present church.

Reverend Manwarring was born in Delaware in 1769 and came to Sullivan County, Indiana, in 1837. He died in 1855 at the age of 86, and was buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery, which is located about 1/2 mile west of the church.

Ebenezer was a part of the New Lebanon Charge in 1840, and the charge elected a board of trustees to erect a 28 x 36 church building on ground donated by Thomas Manwarring. The church was also financed by Thomas Manwarring, and was to be named Ebenezer.

The first building served the church until 1889. A 30 x 40 building was built at that time and was dedicated in 1890. This building served until 1926, when it was then turned around and added onto. In 1961 classrooms, bathrooms and kitchen facilities were added. The church went from gas lights to carbide lights to electric lights in the early 1940's. In 1973 air conditioning was added, and a shelter house was built on the grounds in 1977.

The church maintained a campground in the earlier days. It was located about three miles east of the church and was known as the Swift campground. The church held camp meetings each fall at this location.

In 1870 Ebenezer became a part of the Currysville charge, and in 1881 it became a part of the Farmersburg charge. In 1914 Farmersburg and Ebenezer were made a two point charge, and in 1917 Fletchers chapel and Pimento were added to this charge. In 1920 Pimento, Ebenezer and Fletchers Chapel were made a charge, with Pimento as the head. Eventually in 1962, Shelburn and Ebenezer were made a two point charge and remained this way until 1991 when they each became a single charge. The Reverend Virgil Byrer became the pastor in 1991, and Ebenezer and Shelburn each remain a single charge to this day.  Our current Pastor, Rev. Don Ransford, came to us in June, 1996.

In 1968 the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church and became the United Methodist Church.

In 1990 we celebrated our 150th anniversary with an all day celebration and a time capsule was built in the basement to be opened in the year 2040 if the Lord tarries until then.

The church is active today with an average of 68 in attendance each Sunday. We have a very active United Methodist Women's group. The church has Vacation Bible School one week in the summer each year and a Revival in the fall each year.

In the summer of 2000, we will celebrate our 160th anniversary. God has been good to the people called Ebenezer and we praise His Holy Name.

God is good...all the time...all the time...God is good!
