The First United Methodist Church of Durand will soon begin participating in an ongoing fundraiser called SCRIP. This is a program of buying cash cards from hundreds of nationally known retailers that can be used like a debit card.
Each time you purchase a card from a business, a set percentage of the card’s value is given to our church. This amount donated varies according to the retailer. There are no fees or costs of any kind to those buying the cards. They are simply a convenient, cash-free way of making purchases and donating to our church.
The coordinators for this fundraiser are Laura Alderman and Carol Mose. They will take the orders and payment, tally the orders, and send them to the Great Lakes Scrip Center, located near Grand Rapids. Orders are filled the next day and will be ready for you the following Sunday. We will probably do this monthly. That has yet to be decided. There are no costs or fees of any kind to those buying the cards. They are simply a convenient way of making purchases and in turn donating to your church. The cards are like the gift cards you may have purchased in the past. For example, you may have given an Applebee’s card as a Christmas gift or a Speedway gas card to a teenager. The convenience to you is that the coordinators do the work for you. Some names familiar to you are Ace Hardware, Wal-Mart, Speedway, Sam’s, Kohl’s, Wendy’s and countless others. Order blanks will soon be ready and an informational meeting will be held. Look for more information to come.
Coordinators, Laura Alderman & Carol Mos
SPECIAL NEEDS FUND
As discussed in our January & February Newsletters, one of the things that we are setting up is a special fund within the church to assist those of our congregation who may need some financial help. The format has not been finalized yet, but you can contribute now to this fund. Just mark your offering as “Special Needs Fund.” If there is a need within our church for help and support, let us know so that we can respond in Christian love and charity.
THE COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU!
The Durand Area Loaves & Fishes cupboards are bare! There is now a great demand for food and donations of money. Please donate generously during our Bucket Offering or anytime and also remember we have food baskets in the Narthex!
Distinguished Volunteer
Service Award from the Historical Society of Michigan
NORMA WARD of Durand was presented with a prestigious Distinguished Volunteer Service Award from the Historical Society of Michigan during the organization=s 135th annual Meeting and State History Conference on Mackinac Island Oct. 2 to 4. Mrs. Ward is seen here with Kendall Wingrove, president of the Historical Society of Michigan, shortly after the presentation during the Annual Awards Banquet the evening of Friday, Oct. 2. Wingrove said in his presentation, Agrowing up in the shadow of the 22,000-square-foot Durand Union Station, Ward=s love of the building and railroading became a lifelong devotion. Ward has been a potent force in documenting state and local railroad history, while spending much of her life rehabilitating, protecting and promoting the depot that still captures the splendor of the Victorian era. Her dedicated service helped save one of Michigan=s finest historic landmarks. AWard also set the wheels in motion to secure a location for Durand=s first railroad history museum. Today, the massive train station is home to the Michigan Railroad History Museum, the Margaret Zdunic Railroad Archives and the Henry Earle Riggs Railroad Library. The station is also a regular stop on Amtrak=s Blue Water line that provides daily rail passenger service between Port Huron and Chicago.@
CONGRATULATIONS NORMA!
GIVING A SPARE MOMENT…
T
here are several individuals within the church who could sometimes use an extra hand with everyday chores. Is there anyone with any spare time to please lend them a helping hand? It would be greatly
appreciated!
Please contact the church at 288-3880.
Caroline (Carol) Carlson Bauman
Carol was born at home in Ferndale, Michigan. She attended elementary and junior high school there. She then attended and graduated from Lincoln High School.
Then through a relative, she attended and graduated from Detroit Commercial College as a secretary. She was there for two years.
She began her work years for a gas company called the Louisiana Pipe Line Company in Detroit.
She married her neighborhood sweetheart, Andrew Bauman in 1963. They were married for 24 years when Andrew passed away.
They had started their married life in a bungalow in Ferndale. Andy worked for GM Tech. in Troy. They were joined by a daughter and two sons. They decided the house was a little too small, so they began to look for another. They moved to Troy to a big house.
Andy transferred to SPO in Swartz Creek in 1973, so they moved to Brooks Road where Carol still lives today. But, when they moved, their furniture did not! They only had two lawn chairs as furniture for a week.
When their second son started school, Carol joined a bowling league. Theo Shelp was one of her team members. They called themselves the Flower Pots.
Then Carol went to work for Tupperware in the office. Then she worked at the New Lothrop School in their many offices as a secretary for 20 years.
Carol joined the First United Methodist Church of Durand in 1990. She then joined another bowling league, the Crazy Eights. Carol also took golf lessons, but did not enjoy them. They were at Chippewa Hills in Bancroft. They just did not take.
Carol was the financial secretary at the church for several years. She joins the ladies at the church when they are making quilts, but says she does not sew.
She has one brother and one sister living in Pennsylvania and one brother living in Florida. She has eight grandchildren.
Carol has done some traveling. She has spent two winters in Florida. She has been to Pennsylvania and California.
She really enjoyed working with the kids at the New Lothrop Schools.
She exercises at the Durand Senior Center two days a week.
Carol has been having trouble with hornets getting into her house for two years. We had a very nice visit.
