"The Real Place"

Duff Street United Methodist Church
Where Sunday School is --
"The Real Place"

"The Real Place" is the place to experience Adventures in the Bible! Each Sunday 9:50 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. children from Kindergarten to 5th Grade meet in the Education Building. Now at "The Real Place" -- Computer Lab AKA "God.com"

What is "The Real Place?"

It's where our elementary childrenn go during the Sunday School hour, but it's more than just Sunday School. It's adventures in the Bible. The United Methodist curriculum is called Power Express and is formatted in the rotation learning style. That means, children do not have a different Bible story every week. They dig into one story for five weeks. The will experience the story through:
  • drama - Praise Productions led by Brad and Rhonda Franklin
  • art - Thou Art led by Diana Crim
  • cooking - Garden of Eatin' led by Connie McNair
  • games and music - Noah's Arcade and Jesus and Me (J.A.M.) Session led by Lois Gilmore and Larry Smith
  • computer - God.com led by Tiffani Murphy

Why do they have the same lesson for five weeks?

Children have different learning styles. We hope that through these different ways of presenting the story, they will be learning the story in the ways that reach them. Also, children learn through repetition. If they hear the story several times in different ways, it is bound to stick. It is another way to help our children really learn the message of the Bible. How can we deny them that?

How does the roation work?

We have three age groups. All of the children meet together for an opening with Bonita Totten. This is a time for attendance and offerings and a brief introduction in drama to our lesson for the day. Then each age group goes with their "shepherd" to their station for that week. We have a very dedicated and exciting staff for "The Real Place."
  • kindergarten and first grade Shepherd - Heather Jesina
  • grades two and three Shepherd - Sheree Burlas
  • grades four and five Shepherd- Kim Denny

Where is "The Real Place?"

If you haven't been down the hallway of the Education Building lately, take a stroll and see the bright welcoming walls -- thanks to Katy and Diana Crim and Tiffani Murphy. There's more to come as we continue work on making our children's space more inviting.
