5th Sunday Gospel Hour & Covered Dish Dinner - An ongoing highlight of Driftwood United Methodist Church is participation in the Driftwood UMC “Fifth Sunday Gospel Hour”, a.k.a. the ‘Driftwood Gospel Oprey’ conducted on every 5th Sunday! Residents and visitors from both near and far gather at the historic church to visit, worship while being serenaded by the many talented members and ‘special guest artists’ who participate with the Driftwood Gospel Praise Band and choir. Immediately following the worship service all are invited to gather in the adjacent Fellowship Hall and partake of a sumptuous feast prepared by the many members and visitors who bring covered dishes made using their award winning family recipes handed down for generations. On days when we are blessed with perfect Hill Country weather some of the dinners take advantage of the picnic tables set among the beautiful oaks surrounding the church facilities. After dinner others stroll through the adjoining historic Driftwood Cemetery noting the headstones of early pioneers and settlers who first settled the community, as well as visiting the resting places of loved ones and friends.
Ash Wednesday Service – An Ash Wednesday Service is conducted at 7:00 P.M. on Ash Wednesday, which marks the first day of Lent and occurs 40 days (not including Sundays) prior to Easter, each year. Depending on the date of Easter in any given calendar year, Ash Wednesday can occur as early as Feb. 4 or as late as March 10. The Ash Wednesday worship service includes a corporate confession and the imposition of ashes placed on the foreheads of the followers with the pastor marking the forehead with black ashes in the shape of a cross. The symbolism echoes the ancient Near Eastern tradition of throwing ashes over one's head to signify repentance before God.
TOPGood Friday Service - Driftwood United Methodist Church conducts a Good Friday service each year at 7:00 p.m. on the Friday immediately before Easter to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus, who according to the Gospels, was put to death on the Friday before the day Christians celebrate as Easter. This service includes hymns, prayers, scripture readings, meditations, and reflections upon the suffering that Jesus endured that we might have eternal life.
TOPDriftwood UMC Community Egg Hunt – In 2008 Driftwood United Methodist Church initiated the Annual DUMC Easter Egg Hunt on the Saturday immediately before Easter for the children of Driftwood and surrounding communities, ages 0 thru 12 years. The event was attended by more than 25 children accompanied by parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings and friends. Approximately 450 eggs were hidden by church volunteers before the hunt and all were found by the eager young participants.
TOPEaster ‘Son’ Rise Service & Community Breakfast – An early morning ‘Son’
Rise Service is conducted jointly each Easter at 7:00 a.m. by the Ministers of
The Baptist Church of Driftwood and the Driftwood United Methodist Church.
The congregations of the two churches attend the joint service and alternate
years hosting the service. Currently the Methodist Church hosts the service
in even numbered years and the Baptist Church hosts the event in odd
numbered years.
Immediately following the ‘Son’ Rise Service all attendees adjourn to the
Driftwood Community Center (located directly behind the Driftwood United
Methodist Church), to participate in the Community Breakfast prepared
and served by volunteers from both churches. All are welcome to attend
both the ‘Son’ Rise Service and Community Breakfast. It is our intent to
feed our brothers and sisters both spiritually and physically!
Traditional Easter Service – Driftwood United Methodist Church conducts a separate 11:00 a.m. Easter Service for those who also desire to attend a Traditional Easter Service. One of the high lights of the Traditional Easter Service is the ‘Living’ Cross which enables worshipers to individually commemorate the resurrection of our Savior and of the impending resurrection of those loved ones who have gone on to God’s Kingdom ahead of us.

TOPDriftwood United Methodist Church conducts an Annual Blessing
of the Animals Service the second Sunday in October each year.
Everything from dogs and cats to hamsters, hedgehogs, and horses
have received blessings over the history of the celebration which on
occasion has been compared to the procession of animals that entered Noah’s Ark!
Blessings come only from God. So, blessing an animal is bestowing
a request that the creature will experience the favor of God. The
custom of blessing animals is usually associated with St. Francis of Assisi,
and it commemorates St. Francis' advocacy and love for all of God's
creatures and creation.
Individuals of all faiths are invited to bring their pets and companion
animals (properly restrained) to the field located across the highway
from Driftwood United Methodist Church, 15090 RR 150 W, Driftwood, Texas, t
he second Sunday of October at 11:00 a.m. for the "Blessing of the Animals."
The worship gathering will offer praise and thanksgiving to God for the animals
that God has placed in our lives, and will include music, prayer, the Word, and
a sermon delivered by Pastor Carl Clark, as well as the blessing of the animals.
Thanksgiving Celebration – on the Wednesday before the week of Thanksgiving, a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner is served at the 6 PM Wednesday Fellowship Dinner. Roasted turkey is prepared by Pastor Carl and the rest of the fixings (dressing, gravy, hot rolls, numerous vegetables, salads, deserts, etc.) are prepared as covered dish items by those desiring to participate. All are welcome to come, bring your favorite Thanksgiving dish or dishes, and participate with us in Christian fellowship.
TOPHanging of the Greens – The Hanging of the Greens provides the congregation a time to prepare Driftwood United Methodist Church for the season which the Christian Church has celebrated for many years called Advent. Advent is the season of preparing for the birth of Christ. Advent helps us to meditate on the wonder of Christ’s coming. Following the physical preparation of the Church facilities, a worship service is conducted in which we honor Christ’s birth by using songs and symbols reminding us of God’s glory and the incarnation of God’s love in the world. For God loved us so much that Christ was given to the world, so that everyone who believes in the Messiah will not perish, but will have eternal life.
