                                 Herald's  Trumpet

The news is not good.  Soldiers are dying in Afghanistan, Iraq, and even back home, recently at Fort Hood in Texas.

The news is not good.  Unemployment is over 10%, banks have failed or been merged.  The government has taken control over automobile manufacturers.  The stock market is thousands lower than two years ago.

The news is not good.  Many churches are suffering both in attendance and in giving to the church.

What are we to do?  Is it time to throw in the towel and just give up?  Is there too much despair in the world to go on?

A little over 2000 years ago, people were in despair.  They were subject to a corrupt Roman rule.  They were subject to a corrupt religious rule.  There was no hope for the future.

But the news is good for them in their day and for us today.  “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.”

The news is good.  From that text in Isaiah 9:6 came a promise of hope to a people in despair.  And the Christ child was born to save the lost sheep of Israel.

The news is good.  That same Christ came to be the savior of the world.  We who claim to be Christians have that good news.  Because we believe, we are saved.

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Lord this year, we need to remember that the good news far outweighs the bad news.  Let us truly celebrate Christmas, and let us celebrate it together in church on Christmas eve.

Grace and Peace!
