Return to top 175th Anniversary and Homecoming Celebration 2008 marked the 175th year that there has been an official Methodist congregation in the Cos Cob/Mianus area. This congregation is now called the Diamond Hill United Methodist Church, which has met in the stone church at the top of the hill on the Post Road for 140 years. Diamond Hill has been celebrating this anniversary year for many months, and the year’s festivities culminated November 9 at a Grand Anniversary and Homecoming Celebration, which will included an anniversary worship service at 10 a.m., followed by a 12 p.m. lunch. The lunch included a photographic history of the church, entertainment from the Diamond Hill Theater Company, and a presentation from First Selectman Peter Tesei declaring November 9 "Diamond Hill 175th Anniversary Day". The celebration was organized through the Diamond Hill Archive Committee, comprised of Carol Willson, Grace DeMott, Lynn Miculcy, Mary Cameron, Ruth Wilson, and Vesta Saleeby. This group of dedicated individuals has been meeting and working for several years to go through the many archives and loose documents of Diamond Hill Church, researching Methodist and Cos Cob history, and compiling the most interesting photographs and facts of the church’s heritage. The Archive Committee has uncovered Diamond Hill’s rich Methodist heritage in Cos Cob, which was highlighted on November 9. Most interesting have been the stories of the people of Cos Cob who attended Diamond Hill. From the laypersons who held early Methodist meetings in secret to the Methodist “circuit rider” who mounted his horse at 4 a.m. to provide sacraments and preaching to his many Societies; from those who donated land and money for the current stone building to the women who have been putting on community fairs up to this day; from the young men who pumped the organ for many years to the spontaneous group of joyful Christians that gathered at the church on VJ Day in 1945, who could not help but sing and give thanks to God; from the “Ding-a-lings” comedic theater group of the 1960’s to those who provide arts and hospitality today at Diamond Hill. Congratulations, Diamond Hill! Return to top |
