The Adult Vacation Bible School met for five consecutive nights the week before our children’s VBS. Call of the Deep:Diving into God’s Way of Life gave us an opportunity to relive some of the most wonderful events in our church life as children. It wasn’t just a time to remember. This was a time to explore what it meant for Biblical persons to be faithful. It was a time for us to be faith filled. The Third session was titled Diving into Forgiveness. scripture was from Matthew 18:21-22. Jesus responds to Peter, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.” idea reflected on the Old Testament statements of Cain and Lamech worrying about revenge.Jesus calling us to forgive reversing the the vengeance mentioned in Genesis. At the close of each study we sang“Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.” This night, the forgiveness night, the fourth verse“Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart.” Drew all of us closer as we looked at the candle burning representing Christ’s Light to us. It was one of those times that you felt the Holy Spirit. guess you just had to be there.Maybe you’ll be there next year.
Beach Party, Surfin’ the Word, was a Vacation Bible School that totally caught the wave of God’s love here at Dove. We started the week with just the right amount of crafts and snacks and materials. Then the big wave hit on Monday morning and big surprise and great timing 8 more surfers and 5 more leaders. God is Good! The new science center was a great hit! No matter who you talked to everyone was havin’ a surfin’ good time. The bottles washed up on the craft room floor and scriptures for each day were put inside. There are so many helpers and leaders to Thank. A great BIG thank you goes to our Director, NormaJean McCarthy, who kept us all on our boards so that we rode the wave straight through to Friday. The 11:00 service will have a celebration for all to share.
Family Retreat at NAU will be remembered as the guitar singing and hiking event of the summer. Our own Olympic Games set the stage for the Beijing Games. I am sure the competition will be nothing as dangerous as walking with a balloon between your knees while balancing a golf ball on a spoon. Each team won a medal. The cheering was fantastic. The winners circle gave us all a chance to have vanilla or chocolate ice cream. Saturday Night brought new skills to our Square dancing abilities. We gathered a lot of wisdom from Albert Vermeulen’s teaching. The children are looking forward to persevering through the year so that they can join in again as the family retreat is already in progress for planning next year. Sign up early and don’t miss out; we’re looking at a new place in Prescott
Dove’s Annual UMOM Back-to-School clothing drive was a colossal success!! Once again Dove’s members pitched in an provided back-to-school clothes for 110 children! A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL who so generously donated to this mission! These children will start the new school year knowing that Dove is a church that truly cares for them.
The DYF/Halos Mission Trips were amazing this year. The Jr. and Sr. Halos Honor Choir went to Cortez and Durango Colorado. While the Halos Honor Choir went to Boston, New Hampshire and Maine. There were a total of 14 concerts given by both groups combined. Our audiences included extended care centers, a Southern Baptist Church, summer child camps, a performance on George's Island in Boston Harbor, to a United Methodist Elementary and Jr. High Camp in New Hampshire, and at a Soup Kitchen in Boston. Of note was a work project we did in conjunction with the Cortez Police Department. We worked on the yards of several elderly residents. We look forward to performing many more times here at home at Dove, and at many venues located in the Valley.
Carnegie Hall Update The repertoire of 11 compositions has been chosen of various genres for the evening’s concert. The ladies will be looking radiant in black dresses and the men in snazzy tuxedos with crisp white bow ties. What elegance and honor everyone shall especially feel next June 6, 2009 for this once in a life time experience. Throughout the months of September, 2008 to February, 2009 there will be various fundraising events hosted by three of the adult choirs that are Carnegie Hall bound. The money raised will go only toward the cost of the $590.00 participation fee that is required of each participant. It is a great honor to represent Dove of the Desert UMC in NYC next June, and ask that anything anyone is able to donate above and beyond their normal Dove giving is greatly appreciated. Any donation made to the Carnegie Hall fund with the goal of $23,600.00 is tax deductible. Look for the chart showing the fundraising progression toward the grand finish. Up coming events: September 26-28th, Book CD, DVD sale, November 2nd, Hawaiian Luau-with authentic Hawaiian dancers, Hawaiian cuisine, Silent auction, Sponsor a choir member. The largest fundraising effort will be in introducing a Gift Card Scrip Program. Purchasing retail gift cards through this program will give a percentage of the face value back to the non-profit group immediately. The long term plan is to make this a permanent Dove program with the monies raised after the Carnegie Hall fundraising efforts to benefit the general budget. Look for this to roll out soon. Keep an eye on your Dove Tales and in the Sunday bulletins for more specific information as time progresses
